1) I find it useful to visit Newington. It allows both conduct of business with the staff, and simple expression of appreciation for staff efforts. Informal discussions can provide insight into current concerns and also possibly uncover issues that might end up involving the Board in the future. 2) On a cost per travel-mile basis, Hartford seems no more costly than other cities such as New York. For example January 18 -22, 2006, LAX-JFK = $316. LAX-BDL=$305! Fares from all airlines can easily be compared on www.sidestep.com 3) In addition to not having to pay for staff travel, there is no need to pay staff for travel time. They devote more of their time to their core functions. 4) There is one Director living in the Hartford area, and several other Directors, Vice-Directors, and officers within driving distance. There is no one local to Las Vegas or New Orleans, for instance. 5) If there are any new additions to the Directors and Vice-Directors, this permits them to receive the orientations on the same trip. Building on the comments of other, I'd like to add just a couple of thoughts. The idea of moving Board meetings around the country to meet the locals has appeal to me. Doing this would require a bit of planning to avoid anyone having the impression we would rent the local opera house to hold open sessions, however. A reception on Saturday evening for interested locals, as an example, might work out nicely to demonstrate we either have no horns at all or they in the least are retractable. Cash bar, of course. There may be advantage to holding the "annual meeting" in Hartford simply because we typically do more business at this meeting than at the second meeting. Being nearer to staff and files (even in the electronic communication age) could be useful. Considering the above thoughts, there is no reason we could not modify our governing documents so that the "annual meeting" came in July and in Hartford, and that the January (second) meeting could be held elsewhere in the country. If we're going to think outside the box, let's think outside the box. Again this is a generic reply not specifically geared to Rev or Mike's comments. I previously express a preference for Hartford but understand that making the Meeting more visible could have some advantage. If we are going to change a policy we really ought to do it in a straight forward manner and amend the By Laws to eliminate the preference for a January meeting "in the vicinity of" Newington, CT. Well I guess I was better off than you on that day. We had a good time if you call it that. At least there was something on TV worth watching. Sorry to hear about your illness, I hope that does not come back. At W9DXCC one of the programs, I think it was about the PJ2T station revival, played a brief audio CW tape apparently where a few 9s were included in the audio. K9JF was overwhelming in the pileup. Not a real 9 but it was impressive. 6 OCT, 2005 - 1155 CDT As one those who had their travel plans were disrupted by snow twice this year, I have the following observations. 1. The total travel expense for a board meeting is approximately the same regardless of where it is held. 2. The total hotel expense is probably a bit less if we meet in the Hartford area because staff (with the exception of one or two people) usually go home each night. 3. A major snow event in Hartford can easily increase the hotel cost well beyond the incremental cost of having staff travel and stay at a hotel. 4. Air fares, in general, are somewhat cheaper for destinations other than Hartford, CT. This will help offset some of the additional staff travel cost. I vote for a 2006 winter board meeting location away from Hartford. I have no preferred non-Hartford favorite destination for a winter board meeting. But if we are to go to someplace other than Hartford, I suggest Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, or New Orleans. And before you think I am nuts, I believe there will be some really good New Orleans hotel rates for the next 12 months or so - with the exception of Mardigras week. 73 - Dick, W9GIG

Hi, I guess that we are getting just a little too efficient around here. We have finally hired a membership manager, Sarah Dorsey, and she started just yesterday. Our internal communications were so good that we posted it on the web site this morning before I had a chance to send out the announcement to the Board. Sorry about that! Although this position was approved in November, it took Dennis and I a long time to find the candidate that we were looking for. We believe that Sarah will do a great job for us. Hello Jim, I'm in favor of holding the January meeting in Hartford, as much as I hate cold weather! Changing the Board meetings back to Spring and Fall interests me. As I recall, the reason we quit that in the past was a matter of timing for budget approval.
