I have to admit I enjoyed bumming around with the guys a bit on Sunday. I missed the majority of you, but a few of us stayed in the Concierge room watching the tube. I got out FB on Monday morning, but it was earlier than I would have preferred. I think my flight was the first, maybe second, of the day and left before 6 AM. These comments are not specifically in response to Dave's message, rather it is simply a handy reply mechanism. According to Article 25 of the By Laws "The Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors shall be held in the vicinity of Newington, Connecticut, beginning on the 3rd Friday of January." From time to time the Board has stretched the meaning of "the vicinity of Newington" to include places such as Dallas. It seems to me there are good reasons for holding the meeting near Headquarters. If the Board feels otherwise we should change the Bylaws. There is no certainty that changing the location or the date will avoid weather issues. Last year A&F met in Denver in April. They encountered the same weather issues we worked through in Hartford in January. From the standpoint of doing the work of the Board the meeting space and rooms at a Marriott in Windsor isn't any different than a Marriott in Dallas or Memphis or any other "warm weather" location. Though we rely on Reports to provide background and point out important issues and activities to the Board simply can't take the place of face to face discussions or the opportunity to question knowledgeable staffer or other Report preparer. There may be merit in not requiring the number of Staff to attend the full Board Meeting that has been recent practice. Should we meet away from Hartford we either need to have all those Staffers travel to the meeting site or not have them available as a resource. Though not directly a part of the question of where we should meet it has been my impression and the impression of a few other Board members I spoken with that our use of a Consent Agenda has swung the pendulum too far in the direction of limiting discussion or questions. I for one intend to be more inclined to pull items from the Consent Agenda. Jim, the bylaws set Hartford as the default location for both the Annual Meeting and the Second Meeting. Either meeting can be moved by Board action as described in the bylaws. While most people believe that the song "Stuck In Lodi Again" was written about Lodi, California, which sort of makes sense since most members of Creedence Clearwater Revival are from the Bay Area, I've been told more than once that it was really about Lodi, New Jersey where the band was stuck indoors by bad weather while in the New York area to do a concert at Madison Square Garden. I've never known the facts, but Lodi is such a short drive from San Francisco, etc. that it's hard to imagine them being stuck anywhere that close to home. I'm perfectly happy to meet anywhere. In fact, I think it might be a good idea politically; we as a group are really too distant from our members. If we were to, as a matter of policy, move the January meeting every year, we could get some great exposure with our consituents. If we decide to do this, let the meeting be in a different division each time. At least half the time, it would be warm ;-) The summer meeting we could keep in Newington. I too was stuck in Hartford. I'd rather have been (as the song goes) "Stuck in Lodi." It's a small town near Stockton but at least its warm and in the Pacific Time Zone. I vote for (as usual) Las Vegas. We don't need a whole lot of staff in attendance anyway. I could go for Dallas or Phoenix too. Even St. Louis would be ok.
