Board meeting

I very much enjoy visiting Newington and speaking one on one to the staff. There is no substitute for that experience; however, it would be far better to hold the winter meeting in a more temperate area. There still exists travel bargains to certain destinations across the US. Hartford, although it is "home" for amateur radio, is not on the discount list. Many staff reports now delivered in person could be delivered via electronic means. This is the age of audio and video conferences. As leaders and innovators in technology and communications, we should employ all of the "whistles and bells" to modernize our Board meetings. My opinion. David, K5RAV

Jim, Now that is pretty funny. As I recall, I think Andy was the last guy to get home overall. The worst part of that ordeal was sitting on hold to rearrange a flight only to have it cancelled a few hours later and have to start over. The best part was watching football with the gang on Sunday afternoon. I understand the issues surrounding staff travel but what staff do we really need in attendance? One trip to HQ per year is enough for me! It is a full day of travel to the east coast and, given planning, the air fare can be pretty reasonable to other places. However, isn't there a rule that says the business meeting needs to be in the Hartford area? Jim, I favor Hartford. It is a known commodity and it is good to have the opportunity to see staff and surely does cost less. I suspect it also less stress for staff. Last January I was almost the last one out of Hartford and I still can vote for Hartford. Anyplace more centrally located works better for those of us who are not located in the Northeast. For those of us who still work, it's especially hard on our time off when we must take all-day Thursday as a vacation day for travel on top of all-day Friday for the meeting. I can get to more centrally located cities like Dallas or Denver without losing a whole day. I also recognize the flip-side of that because staff members who normally do not have to travel would then have to do so. I certainly do not take issue with the opinions voiced by Kay, Bernie and Bill. On the other hand, bad weather in Philly, Chicago, etc. would affect no more than a couple of folks. Bad weather that occurs at the inopportune moment at Bradley clearly has the capability of affecting most of us. If the only factor we need to consider before changing the meeting location is the likelihood of experiencing severe weather, a move to a warmer climate would seem to be in order. My question is whether the alternate considerations that encourage us to stay in Windsor outweigh the desire to have greater potential flexibility in movement. What are the trade-offs? I prefer meetings near HQ. Also, regardless of where we hold the meeting, I could have winter wx problems affecting the Philadelphia airport. Having the meeting in Miami wouldn't help me if I can't get out of Philly. And as Bill pointed out, transporting a number of staff members halfway across the country to some other meeting location runs the costs up. I wish we held the annual meeting later in the year when weather might be less of an issue, but that's another topic for another time. 73 - Kay N3KN

Since I won't be at the meeting, it really doesn't matter to me. But .... consider the fact that I have personally had to miss meetings in other parts of the country because of the massive snow piles here in the East. Do we really gain anything by going outside of the HQ area for the "Annual Meeting?" Last year was not a normal winter storm, thus we can't consider that aberration in our planning.
