I just got notified via e-mail that I've won $1.5 Million. Its not even from Nigeria or South Africa...its from the Netherlands (of course they may be smoking something over there). Another note for the new year: IRS ANNOUNCES DECREASE IN STANDARD MILEAGE RATE FOR BUSINESS MILES: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced effective January 1, 2003, the standard deductible mileage rate for the cost of operating a car for business purposes will decrease from the current 36.5 cents per mile to 36 cents per mile. In accordance with our policy, the ARRL will reimburse mileage for automobile travel at the rate of 36 cents per mile effective January 1, 2003. 73, Barry, N1VXY

President Haynie's earlier message reminded me that it is also the time of year to remind everyone about the deadline for reporting Division, Committee, Board and other expenses. With the Board meeting being a bit early this year due to the calendar, we would appreciate your providing all 2002 expense reports by no later than Wednesday, January 8, 2003. This will insure that we have all the appropriate information to provide financial reports that are as complete as possible to the Board at the January meeting. As ususal, there will be proper 2002 expenses that you will not have by that date (e.g. telephone bills) and we will accept estimates of those expenses so that we may include them in the year-end numbers. Hello, all - The FCC is holding an open Commission meeting next Wednesday, Dec. 11. Item 5 on that agenda reads 5 OFFICE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY TITLE: Additional Spectrum for Unlicensed Devices Below 900 MHz and in the 3 GHz Band. SUMMARY: The Commission will consider a Notice of Inquiry concerning the possibility of permitting unlicensed transmitters to operate in additional frequency bands. (see http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Miscellaneous/Public_Notices/Agenda/2002/ag02121… ) Does anyone know what this is all about? 73. Jim, W6CF

Hi All, I am very sorry to hear about the ice damage to Coy, Joel, Leslie and others antennas. Here in the immediate Memphis area, it was only rain and winter warnings. However, about 80 to 100 miles North of us it was really bad with the ice. We were very Blessed here in the Mid-South or the immediate Memphis area. In 1994, there was an ice storm here in Memphis everyone talks about now. We had just moved here from another location in Memphis and I had decided not to re-install another tower due to restrictions. The antenna-killer storm has now made its way to my area of southeastern Pennsylvania. For the moment, it's just snow. Here's hoping it stays as snow and doesn't mutate into an ice storm. I had enough of those stinkers while growing up in Atlanta, thanks very much. And I thought I had something to complain about when high winds broke down some of my wire antennas during CQWW! Tuck, As I may have mentioned before, George Race and Gary Johnston have extolled the great virtues and abilities of the Board family a number of times; however, if you can pull off 70 degree weather in Newington in mid-January, their praises will have proven to be far too puny! We are getting ice in the Greater Cincinnati metro area, but by the time it is over, I doubt if any of my antennas will be at my feet.
