Tuck - it is times like this that I am reminded about all the "hot air" I hear at hamfests, how I didn't want to hear it then but would sure love some of it now!!!! Coy, sure sorry to hear about all the freezing. I do remember those days when I lived in Illinois. Well Coy and Joel sorry to hear the antenna news . It has rained frozen precip all day here in South Carolina and most of my antennas are down and broken also. The worst is my best dipole tree is down and it took all the wires with it . Also cliped one tower guy but the tower still up. Real bad news is they say were getting the big stuff tonight. Sorry to hear it, Coy. I just wish you had not sent it across the state line into Arkansas. After watching the antennas on my HF tower sag worse and worse all day, just about an hour ago when the 40 mtr beam went down, it took the KT34XA with it along with the 160 mtr vertical. Beverages were all down this morning. Oh well. I survived the one ice storm 2 years ago and the one 6 years ago.....guess I was due, but after just now recovering from a catastrophic lightning hit this past summer, I'm starting to believe God is telling me to do something else! For the past several weeks I have been following the thread on 11 meter freebanding first on the DXAC reflector and now on ODV. The DXAC group seems to fully aware of this situation and appears willing to work on suggested solutions to the problem if asked. I think we ought to ask. Before we take any final action I for one would like to know the following: 1. What is there about freebanding that motivates these folks to put so much time and effort into what is essentially a single band top of the cycle activity? 2. Who is behind the name Alpha Delta organization, the group assigning freeband callsigns, out of Italy? 3. Are any of these freeband activities being sponsored by manufacturers? There is some indication ICOM France provided some support for the Chesterfield DXpedition. 4. Do we have any information on the number of ham DXpeditions also operating on the 11 meter freeband? There have been suggestions freebanders have been part of or a tag-along on the Chesterfield, Temotu, East Timor and Gambian DXpeditions. Other information indicates freebanders have operated from Desecheo, VU7, YV0, SV/a and other places with restricted access. 5. What does this mean for our DXing hobby in the long run? Is freebanding an activity with a pop culture life span of the Pet Rock or is it here to stay? 6. How much damage has it done or will it do to DXing ? How do we distinguish legitimate DXers from those freebanders who not only can not be troubled to get permission to land and operate from places like Desecheo, but seem to feel that the possibility of being discovered and arrested while there only heightens the thrill and value of the contact? 7. What, if anything, can we do to convert these folks to joining the ranks of mainstream, law-abiding Amateur Radio DXing? 73, Jay, KØQB

I'm with you Jim however, even if we have a broad generalization or two to use, I think it best to address the subject directly with a specific rule or two. We probably need to differentiate between Desecheo (illegal "freebander" operation associated with a DXCC type operation) and somewhere where "freebanding" may be legal or at least outside of US jurisdiction. It all should come under DXCC jurisdiction. For those of you who have expressed concern for our current situation. The freezing rain has been forming on the antennas all afternoon. As the sun was going down the ice was about a half inch thick. As most of you know, I lost ALL my antennas last January. As I'm typing this, chunks of ice/elements are crashing onto the roof. The weather man says that the ice will turn to sleet around 4AM. Ouch! I knew this was coming. I finally got the 40 meter beam and the slopers for 80 and 160 up this last week. :-( Coy ...........
