[arrl-odv:32397] The Future Will Look Different

The predictions found in the enclosed link, if true, mirror Dave's response to Hal's frightened question: What is going to happen? — Something wonderful. Many companies are working on versions of what is discussed; even if half of those companies efforts come to fruition, the future will effect a transitional jump. If that occurs, whither goes Amateur Radio? At a minimum, every radio manufacturer will be behind the curve. I've been lucky to participate in a think tank considering similar problems from an infrastructure perspective. https://www.magicleap.com/en-us/about As all of us have seen recently, it is difficult to integrate body-cam views into coherent views. I'm sure the folks at Axon are looking for a way to do this. Bodycams invariably store images to upload opportunistically. The limiting factor after 3d/virtual reality becomes reality are bandwidth and latency. How much and how quickly can data be moved that represents the real world in real time? We will damn sure solve the "if a tree fell in the forest" nonsense Modeling a 3D world in real time via CDNs sure would save moving scenery around the Internet... CDNs can update differential in real time (no speed of light delay) via a quantum network. It looks like we're getting close to making THAT a reality: https://phys.org/news/2021-01-world-quantum-network.html The future looks fun! 3D mapping is here and improving. Some of the drone jobs I've been doing as a remote pilot in command are mapping using DJI Terra using their RTK system and LiDAR: https://www.dji.com/dji-terra Mostly for inspections but also inventory of assets. Skydio now has 3D imaging using their drones, as well: https://www.skydio.com/3d-scan Skydio is a company that was founded by ex Tesla engineers, and their hallmark is having amazing autonomous capabilities. 73 Ria, N2RJ On Sun, May 23, 2021 at 5:42 PM John Robert Stratton <N5AUS@n5aus.com> wrote:

Fairly accurate and current 3D mapping has been available for many areas free from usgs.gov for several years as a result of LIDAR. It is used by cellular/radio companies for shadow/fresnel predictions for RF. In 2018, I bought a modeling package for a city to determine what views permitting taller buildings would affect, and potential views from elevations on a proposed structure. You can download LIDAR data and a some tools for free: https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-lidar-data-and-where-can-i-download-it?qt-new... But the article references LIVE 3D data. I'm sure that would be "crowdsourced" from live device data. With enough bandwidth - 5G+ - image points, position and attitude data can update the world, a few billion points of data at a time... If you have a recent iPhone (>= iPhone X), you have some form of 3D mapping in your pocket. Face ID is dependent on it. If you have a recent iPad Pro or iPhone 11 or 12 Pro, you have real LIDAR accessible from apps or your own software on the camera cluster, and can do 3D mapping. It also significantly enhances AR, as well as how pictures are taken. This enables complex computational photography. Don’t miss the videos at the link below. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/lidar-is-one-of-the-iphone-ipad-coolest-tricks-i... Obviously I can’t comment on future products, but you can imagine how powerful the combination of such hardware and ever advancing software will be.

John, et al, IMHO, the future will probably feature some flavor of augmented reality interfaces. 3-D & even VR no longer are “cutting edge.” VR continues to struggle (it’s pretty clunky – I’ve tried multiple versions). Personally, I think augmented reality (AR) is the future, will lap VR, and eventually something like it will become the interface to your PC (or whatever it’s called then). And maybe even your interface to the world (this is a long-shot). One implementation: contesters will compete in multi-operator categories operating remote stations with teammates sitting virtually next to each other tuning the same band while chatting – although physically one operator might be in the U.S. and the other in China. It takes time, but the building blocks are there. Read the NY Times article on Jeri Ellsworth, below. The second link is one of multiple available in which she talks about AR ideas related to amateur radio, including such things as NEC modeling and operating. Listen to 42:05-1:02:00 for that portion. She’s AI6TK. She was at Dayton a few years ago and has spoken at Pacificon, some of you may have attended. She’s one of hundreds (maybe thousands) at start-ups and huge companies alike looking for the winning application. NY Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/24/technology/jeri-ellsworth-augmented-reali... Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBv1qkudT90 (~ 42:00 – 01:02 dwells on some ham radio ideas). 73, Dave K3ZJ From: arrl-odv <arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org> on behalf of John Robert Stratton <N5AUS@n5aus.com> Date: Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 5:42 PM To: arrl-odv <arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> Subject: [arrl-odv:32397] The Future Will Look Different The predictions found in the enclosed link, if true, mirror Dave's response to Hal's frightened question: What is going to happen? — Something wonderful. Yeah, there is that. But we’ve come a long way since this very day in 1844. It all began when an artist turned inventor sat in the U.S. Capitol and demonstrated the results of Congress having provided funds to conduct a scientific demonstration project. (This may have been the first federal funding for scientific R&D?)
