[arrl-odv:20284] Power outages hit Connecticut

Heavy, wet snow coupled with blustery wind and trees that still have their leaves have combined to deliver another major power disruption in Connecticut. At the moment 40% of the customers of Connecticut Light & Power are without power, and things are likely to get much worse before they get better. The storm is expected to continue until tomorrow morning. At this point I don't have a status report on HQ other than that the power there appears to be on. (It went off at my home in Coventry just before 4 PM; I am running my wifi router from a battery.) So much for enjoying 10 meters this weekend (but it sure was fun while it lasted). 73, Dave K1ZZ

CL&P says 770,000 customers in Connecticut are without power and that it will take a week or more to restore everyone. As best I can tell by calling the fax number (the machine is not on backup power and it picks up) the power is on at HQ so we should be able to open tomorrow, but a lot of staff probably will not be able to make it in. Barry Shelley reports his road is blocked in both directions by fallen trees. I expect to lose the Internet and wireline phone later today; if Tropical Storm Irene is any indication, AT&T's batteries won't last. Cellphone is OK here but a lot of cell sites around the state are out. Dave K1ZZ

The corner of Newington where ARRL HQ (including the warehouse) is located did not lose power, although 92% of the town is still without. Most of the staff is at work although most do not have power at home. The Gap vertical on the roof of the HQ building is now scrap aluminum, but the main building otherwise appears to be OK. The driveway to Main Street was blocked by a fallen tree that has now been cleared although there's a bit more work to do to clear low-hanging branches. W1AW did not fare quite as well. Some big branches came down on the roof and may have caused some damage; Joe Carcia is checking. The main entrance to W1AW was blocked by fallen trees that have now been cleared. The 160 meter antenna is down; both 80 meter antennas are damaged, although we can probably get one back up today; both 40 meter antennas are damaged although one may still work; and one yagi has a vertical element that's supposed to be horizontal.
