[arrl-odv:27211] WMPLOTA

Tom Abernathy may know WAY more about this, but I was told years ago that many Walmart’s across the country allow overnight camping. This was apparently the philosophy of the founder, Sam Walton. An interesting link is here: https://www.elmonterv.com/guide/rv-rental-information/overnight-stay-informa... Not all stores allow overnight camping, but I’ll bet those that do would allow hams to operate through the night for Field Day as well as these contests. ’73 de JIM N2ZZ Director – Roanoke Division Representing ARRL members in the Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina sections ARRL – The National Association for Amateur Radio™ From: arrl-odv [mailto:arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org] On Behalf Of David Norris Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2018 6:08 PM To: Richard J. There is one group in Hood River Oregon that operates field day from the WalMart in their area, right along the I-84 freeway every year. They set up near the entrance to the parking lot and have towers mounted on trailers that they use. Most of the WalMarts that I know of that don’t allow overnight camping are ones that often have a full parking lot of customers in cars or that are in a resort area with lots of RV parks, like along the Oregon coast. Most Walmart’s do allow overnight camping (subject to local ordinances of course) and yes, that was per Mr. Sam’s directive. We did FD operations at two Walmart’s one year back in the mid 90’s as a club recruiting effort. It worked as we picked up about dozen new members/new hams. A Walmart op is not a bad PR move for a local club either. 73 David A. Norris, K5UZ Director, Delta Division Sent from my iPhone
