Fred, All good questions, maybe this is bettersuited for an email or online survey. For an in person meeting, I think we boildown to the top 4 or 5 important items. So we can spend more time on each, normallythe time we can get with these folks are limited. I can help with Huntsville Hamfest. I’m sure by now everyone’s travel is bookedand time allocated already. Vendors usually travel Thursday evening or Fridaymorning, and setup Friday. The show is Saturday and Sunday. Vendor meetingswill probably be informal on Friday afternoon or evening and Sunday when thingsare slower. To answer your question “While the major players may be there, from which oneswill MANAGEMENT be present?” see the reditems in the attached. These are theones I’m pretty sure about. Some of the over vendors are smaller and probablyhave management and/or owners attending. At this year’s Huntsville Hamfest wewill have special guest Rick Roderick and Howard Michel. And normally attendingspecial guest David Norris and Ed Hudgens. I think the five of us could, as time and opportunities permits us talkwith some vendors. I’m not speaking for Rick, Howard, David and Ed on this butwe all normally talk with vendors anyway. Normally some vendors will not giveanything away or say anything useful. I suggest that someone who’s going to be at the event have a conversation with Advertising Manager Janet Rocco beforehand. Sometimes there are issues with a particular account, and certain questions can make the situation more serious. Rather than pressing a hot button inadvertently, it would be better to be forewarned and avoid it entirely. 73, Greg, K0GW

I’ve already spoken with Janet Rocco about this project. I will query her on this sensitivity. -Fred K1VR From: arrl-odv [mailto:arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org] On Behalf Of G Widin Sent: Monday, July 29, 2019 2:17 PM To: Greg Sarratt; Fred Hopengarten Cc: ODV Subject: [arrl-odv:28460] Re: Vendor Listening Tour v3 I suggest that someone who’s going to be at the event have a conversation with Advertising Manager Janet Rocco beforehand. Fred, I about to print out your list to have with me at the Huntsville Hamfest and noticed you were going to talk with Janet Rocco about sensitivities and update the list. Please remind me, are there any sensitivities we need to watch out for? I cannot find the updated list after your last email, please resend to me. I did speak with Janet Rocco before the last Board meeting. She never mentioned any specific sensitivities. The issue of sensitivity was raised by K0GW. Perhaps he’s got something in mind that I don’t know about. While it seems sensible, I know of no special sensitivities – it was his idea. I have no further updates to the list. I’ve returned to my desk too late on Friday to get through to Janet for further info. Again, I emphasize that the type of discussion I’m hoping to promote is not well handled on the show floor, but rather in a hotel room over coffee/sodas. Better to have two serious conversations than more non-serious ones. We have many opportunities to chat with amateur radio vendors. -Fred, K1VR From: arrl-odv [mailto:arrl-odv-bounces@reflector.arrl.org] On Behalf Of Greg Sarratt Sent: Friday, August 16, 2019 11:54 AM To: 'ODV' Subject: [arrl-odv:28584] Re: Vendor Listening Tour v3 Fred, I about to print out your list to have with me at the Huntsville Hamfest and noticed you were going to talk with Janet Rocco about sensitivities and update the list. No, I had no special sensitivities in mind, so if Janet didn’t mention any, I assume the coast is clear. A few years ago, this was a problem with a some discussions with vendors and withdrawn advertising, but I guess (thankfully) that fences have been mended. 73, Greg, K0GW On Friday, August 16, 2019, Fred Hopengarten <k1vr@arrl.org> wrote:

“A few years ago, this was a problem with a some discussions with vendors and withdrawn advertising, but I guess (thankfully) that fences have been mended.” Yes, that was Yasue. They were annoyed at the QST review on Fusion and comparing it to D-STAR. They withdrew 6 figure advertising ($250,000?) for a year or two and only bought a page or two. The sales team made up for it with selling other space after hard work. I assume that was resolved. It was at least 5 years ago now.
