Good afternoon Officers, Directors and Vice Directors, For those of you that are arriving late (after 8:30 p.m.), you will need to get a taxi/or uber to get to the hotel. The Marriott courtesy shuttle does not make any runs after 8:30 p.m. I have just been informed. CONFIDENTIAL: I just read the CEO report, and first of all, thank you David for a very comprehensive and frank report on HQs state of affairs. It is greatly appreciated. I noted that it appears that Paul Gilbert, KE5ZM, our very recently hired Director of Emergency Management is gone already? Was he not a good match with the job description, was it lack of job performance, or just exactly what happened? It is my understanding that the EMDSC spent quite a lot of time vetting the candidates, and now the one they hand picked and HQ hired is gone already (if true). That is certainly discouraging, as it will also be for the membership on the ARES side of the ARRL. Is the plan to reinstate the EMDSC committee and have them start over, or is this now to be a hire orchestrated by HQ staff? Perhaps something to be discussed in the Board meeting. 73; Mike W7VO

Good afternoon: I did a little research after reading the emails pertaining to the dilemma with the shuttle to the airport. I am including numbers for ground transportation options for you. I hope this makes it a little easier! Taxi: For Connecticut fares from Bradley, call (860) 627-3128 or (860) 627-3588. * Estimated taxi fare: 30 USD (one way) Uber/Lyft Information: Services are accessed by using the Uber or Lyft app on your cell phone. Drives are stationed near the terminal and can arrive in 3-5 minutes. Pick-Up Instructions and Location for arriving passengers. From your arrival gate, take the elevator or escalator to the lower level/baggage claim area. Request a ride once you have retrieved your luggage. Proceed out door number 2 and cross to outer roadway. Walk to the left and meet your driver at the Ride App Pickup sign. I have a client in the antenna design business. He writes: EZNEC is a toy program, using free NEC versions developed by LLNL (NEC4 is expensive however). All EZNEC does is add a GUI shell on top of the NEC program. So no one should buy the (copy) rights from Lewallen, whose only 'right' is on a GUI that someone has to maintain. If allowed to go into the public domain, then enough hackers will themselves keep the GUI going and, indeed, improve it. Let it die. Others will pick it up in their own version thereafter. Please understand that this discussion is way beyond my personal ability to contribute meaningfully to the conversation. I am very much looking forward to meeting some of you face-to-face for the first time in person! I need to cover off a couple of things that have come across my desk in the past few days. HQ Reopening: We will be having the ceremony on Thursday morning. The weather looks like it will be cooperating, but it may be quite warm. We are very happy to have a slate of dignitaries who will be joining us as we re-open headquarters and W1AW! We are suggesting that gentlemen wear a sportscoat and open collar. Staff may be wearing ARRL logo shirts, but not t-shirts. It is important to understand that this is a small private ceremony, with HQ management and staff welcoming our Board members back to HQ - our "first among peers" members who we work with, nearly every day, and by sharing this event together we can take the next step forward towards normality! We will be following by bringing back HQ volunteers and then fully re-opening to all our members! This ceremony is not is an ARRL Board Meeting. This ceremony is not open to visitors. This ceremony is not open to anyone other than the ARRL Board family, ARRL Staff, and invited guests. We have made no provisions for refreshments, or for public use of bathrooms. This will be a very short celebration, and then we will head up to Windsor to undertake the business of the Board. As such: * If you are traveling with a companion, and if they would like to attend, please bring them. * Please do not invite others to the event. We have handled all invitations. * If you have already invited someone, such as a member or an ex-Board member, please reverse that to avoid any uncomfortable interactions. * This is not a campaign event. It is not open to outside candidates, and incumbents will recognize the sensitivity and issues with treating it like one. * Parking is going to be very limited. You are requested to take the bus to HQ for the ceremony. * At the end of the ceremony Legislative Affairs members will be speaking directly to the Congressman. Please give them the space to have that discussion. Bob Inderbitzen is running the ceremony. If you have any questions, please drop him a note. COVID protocols: As previously communicated, staff is currently at about 85% vaccinated. That does not mean that there isn't tension in the building with regard to the ceremony on Thursday. Our protocol is that employees who have had their vaccines and have provided documentation to HR are permitted to go maskless. The other employees, and any outside contractors, must wear masks at all times inside the building. We will not, for some time, have any members walking through the building. We have been extremely successful keeping employees safe from exposure. If you are here on Wednesday or on Thursday AM and need to meet with a staff member, you must schedule a meeting and we will have you go directly to the meeting room at the scheduled time for the meeting. The State of Connecticut COVID protocols still require anyone who has not been vaccinated to wear a mask, at all times, while indoors in public places. This includes the Marriott and our meeting spaces. If you have not been vaccinated, please ensure that you adhere to this requirement. Diane Middleton is the expert on the state COVID protocols. >From https://eznec.com/retirement.htm, as of January 1, 2022 Roy Lewallen is retiring and will not support EZNEC. Additionally, he says there is no practical way to sell or transfer ownership to someone else. So eventually (will it work with Windows 11?) EZNEC may fall by the wayside. There are EZNEC files in the ARRL Antenna Book. Do we want to do something to make sure this very popular general modeling software continues? Or do we have to head people towards the more robust antenna modeling packages like FEKO or MMANA-GAL (very popular outside the US). I'm reminded of Director Norton's earlier recent post to the ODV reflector about the ARRL helping in various ways. Should we support someone financially to dig deep to keep EZNEC going?
