Bill Edgar just called and said he had a couple of emails to me bounce and was calling to check on the situation. I don't know why they bounced, but we are experiencing serious problems here in the state thanks to Gustav. It moved out of Louisiana and up into Arkansas along the Arkansas/Oklahoma border and stalled for the last two days dumping up to 17" of rain here with wind, etc. There are numerous power outages all over.we haven't lost power but K5UR did for quite a while as well as my son who lives in Little Rock. Phone service has been iffy as well as email since I have a DSL connection. We're safe and dry (as long as we stay inside) but I don't know the extent of any damage as the wx has been too severe with blowing rain to go out and look. At least the roof isn't leaking!! So, if you have sent me a message and it bounced, just please QRX because our infrastructure is taking a Gustav beating and will need a bit to recover or be repaired. We do have phone service and email back at the moment and hopefully it will stay on, but again it is sporadic. 73 Joel W5ZN

Dave, Thanks for the clarification from ARC. I think the false or misleading information is being posted by hams but the information is actually coming from ARC disaster workers/volunteers and told to the hams. I don't believe the hams are making this up. These contain more sensitive and personally identifiable information at the same time that the Red Cross keeps confidential to respect client privacy. We are researching if and how these messages can be passed across open frequencies, and what federal restrictions (such as HIPPA) may be impact how this is done. Now what might give hams the idea the Red Cross doesn't care for us? You don't suppose it might have anything to do with the fiasco over background checks and the fact that this among other things has caused there to be no SOU for over 9 months? Nah!
