IN-Newsletter Vol. 25, No. 40 October 8, 2002 Development The 2003 Development budget and plan have been revised and submitted. The targeted campaign promoting The Diamond Club mailed to 55,000 ARRL members last week. In addition, interest has come in requests for more information via email. Thanks to Rick Lindquist for including a story about The Diamond Club in last week's ARRL letter to 68,000 members. Contributions to date are at the Introductory level. Our first Board contribution came in October 7. The 2003 Defense Fund is in production and the Web pages are active. Initial contributions have been received since the Web information went live last week, including a new $1000 contribution. The final quarterly Planned Giving letters are scheduled to mail in October. After an initial brainstorming meeting with Jon Bloom, Debra Johnson continues to collect existing information and develop new information for a Development section on the ARRL Web. Mary will make a courtesy call at the African Telecommunications Union in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday October 14, during her vacation. Media Relations Jennifer was interviewed by a reporter for The Washington Post. The reporter is working on a story about Amateur Radio emergency communications, with a focus on the ham radio activity near the Pentagon after the September 11 terrorist attacks. After the interview, the reporter was given the contact information for the ham in Virginia who led the volunteer effort there last year. Jennifer is continuing to work with the reporter on follow-up questions. Another reporter, a freelancer (and ham) from the Merced (CA) County Times, is working on an Amateur Radio emergency communications article. He was particularly interested in the federal grant, and Jennifer sent him the national press release on the topic. The Public Relations Committee held a conference call to discuss several ongoing activities. Per a Board motion made by Director Fallon in July, the group is talking about ways to pump up the efforts to promote Amateur Radio Awareness Day next year. The committee will deliver its final recommendation to the VRC by November 1. Jennifer received the manuscript for the new book "Hello World: A life in ham radio," a book chronicling the ham radio activities (via QSL cards) of Jerry Powell, W2OJW (SK). At first glance, it looks very interesting. The book is set to be published in the spring by a commercial publisher. We continue to receive letters from members who contacted their congressional representatives regarding HR 4720. Those letters and the responses they received are being sent off to Chwat & Co. The staff at Chwat & Co. has also been able to add several Hill visits to the agenda after receiving information from some of our members. Production/Editorial The November/December issue of QEX has been released to the printer. Sales and Marketing Last minute preparations for taking Siebel live continue. Once the system does go live, we will have memberships and publication orders backfill to complete before we can start with current transactions. Obviously, this means that the usual end-of-month statistic reports will be delayed. We anticipate the unexpected as with any system conversion. However, it should be noted that the tremendous amount of time and work put in by Senior Fulfillment Supervisor Kathy Capodicasa has been a key component in efficiently reaching this stage of the project. Thanks go to Kathy and all Sales & Marketing Department staffers who have, and continue to, put so much effort into testing, locating glitches and keeping a positive attitude during a stressful time. Kathy has also been providing proofreading assistance to Bob Inderbitzen on the upcoming ARRL Fall/Winter Publication Catalog. Pre-sales ordering activity for the upcoming new edition of the ARRL Handbook has exceeded our expectations. This is a good sign, considering that we are still at the beginning of October. Although the slight title change caused very little concern within our amateur market, we did find that the change caused some puzzlement with one of our mainstream buyers. To head off the same occurrence elsewhere, we have sent more detailed explanations to our other mainstream customers and followed up with personal phone calls. Thanks to Bob Inderbitzen for assisting in this effort. Deb Jahnke and Lisa Tardette also ensured that all prospective dealer Handbook buyers had been contacted and that we are on track for meeting our October sales goal. Lisa was also busy on the phones with our dealers gathering in over $9,000 in publication orders. Our customers seem to be ordering more aggressively as the Fall/Holiday ordering season approaches, a traditional occurrence. Deb Jahnke spent part of the week introducing our new Sales & Marketing Specialist, Janet Rocco, to the many tasks that will easily fill her day. Janet spent part of the week prepared certificates and assembled a mailing for customers that completed the ARRL license video courses (Technician or General). The follow-up mailing is mainly for goodwill, but also provides a good opportunity to promote membership and publications to customers already satisfied with an ARRL product. Janet is, thankfully, coming up to speed very quickly. Bob Inderbitzen and Deb continue to work with an advertiser and the R.R. Donnelley plant in order to produce a die-cut advertisement that will please our customer using a design that can realistically be handled by plant automation equipment. We are learning that it's a fine line to walk. But we're also learning technical specifics that will allow us to better educate our customers and give us the tools to coordinate some striking ads that can produce some substantial short and long-term ad revenue. We now have over 100 listings reserved for the December QST Business Guide including a nice multi-insertion order from one of our larger dealer networks. Congratulations to Hanan, Lisa and Joe for taking this new idea and turning it into $$$$s. The deadline for December QST advertising reservations is October 18. The issue is shaping up nicely with several current advertisers upsizing their ads. The list of new and returning advertisers continues to grow for upcoming issues: K7OS Sales; The Pouch--radio cases; K1CRA--RF Connectors, Plastidip products; ACOM; AEA; Military Sealift Command (an employment ad); Communications Electronics, Jameco and Optoelectronics. We'd also like to welcome Syspec to the new and upcoming advertisers list. They are currently advertising in Nuts and Volts and will be taking an ad in the December issue. Twelve Advertising Media Kits have been mailed out to potential advertisers this week. Follow up calls were made to earlier recipients of the package. NCJ and QEX ads have been submitted to production for the November/December issues. We've added a baseball hat with the embroidered ARES logo to our apparel offerings available from Barker Specialty. Bob coordinated house ads for the Nov/Dec issue of QEX. We've started shipping the new 2003/2004 15-month calendars, produced by CQ: CQ Amateur Radio Calendar ARRL Order No. 8815 Retail $10.95; CQ Classic Keys Calendar ARRL Order No. 8827 Retail $10.95. Field & Educational Services Rosalie and Mary began making initial assignments to departments for the 2003 ARRL National, based on previous national convention responsibilities. Rosalie took part in the F&ES budget meeting, and prepared minutes from the last ARISS school telecon. $2936 for September. Field Organization/Public Service Chuck Skolaut reviewed and sent to Riley two batches of tapes documenting the playing of music, jamming and excessive bad language. Chuck is also working on long-standing interference complaints to a resident in Arizona, and an unlicensed operation by West Coast fishermen. He gathered data about ham response to Hurricane Lili from SMs in Louisiana and Mississippi, and about FCC emergency declarations for Rick, and monitored HWN protected frequency operation. Chuck assisted in getting the Red Cross SOU posted on our web site. Received report of intruder like interference to 40 meters. Leona Adams requested that arrl.org e-mail addresses be set up for new SMs who began their term October 1 (Rich Beebe, N0PV - SD and Sharon (Sherri) Brower, W4STB - SFL). She sent SM candidacy paperwork to Bill Uschan, K4MIS of Kentucky. She and Rosalie assisted with e-mails for Steve while he has been on vacation. Leona sent 113 appointment supply packages to appointees with assistance from other F&ES staff, and she handled expenses for SM budgets, and sent new ham labels to SMs. Field & Educational Support Team Linda Mullally sent out 7 Exhibit Kits and 9 JOTA Kits. She also completed the F&ES Inventory and Monthly Revenue Reports. September's revenue brought in by F&ES for such things as shipping reimbursement and educational videotapes and materials totaled $2,936. Jean Wolfgang sent fliers to the National Girl Scout convention on October 17-20. Arline Berry, W1LIO, will travel to CA to participate and operate amateur radio station W6S from the convention. Jean received, and shared with several staff, a letter written by a fellow who believes Amateur Radio had a major impact on his education. While he was in 8th grade, 20 years ago, a teacher/ham helped turn his negative behavior around by introducing him to ham radio. Margie Bourgoin reports that she sent out electronic and hard copy monthly mailings to clubs with new hams and license changes. She still is seeing heightened activity with the Youth Sked database listing, mostly for JOTA, which occurs at the end of the month. Gail Iannone sent 3 hamfest approval letters to the sponsoring clubs confirming the Division Director's approval of the events to be ARRL-sanctioned and sent 2 initial hamfest application packets to the clubs seeking sanctioning for their events. She also processed 7 door prize orders, 1 label request and sent 9 handout packages for upcoming events. She also helped Leona with field appointment packages. Mary Lau reports that Linda Mullally is back and doing a great job assisting our Members. Mary assisted Dick Isely with materials to help his club establish a scholarship. She relayed messages for the following Sections: MS = 5; ID = 2; and KY, AR, NLI, NTX, CO = 1 each. Regulatory Information John Hennessee is assisting Chris Imlay and Jim Maxwell with coordinating the Continuing Legal Education workshop to be held October 18 at Pacificon in California. He assisted an amateur with an RFI preemption and PRB-1 zoning problem in Grand Rapids, MI (AB8ND). Emergency Communications Grant Dan Miller saw over 300 hams from the Field Organization and AECs register this week for the CNCS nationwide training. Because UTC-grant-funded training in Connecticut needs a few more graduates, a class will open soon for any Connecticut ham. In addition, a hybrid class has been developed for ARRL HQ hams. Staffers will use both the printed manual and online access, and do lunch-hour Student Activities for the course in order to gain knowledge and hands-on experience needed to join the ranks of those already active in ARES. CCE Jerry Ellis opened a Satellite Communications class and assigned mentors for same. He transferred approximately 30 Level I students from non-refundable to refundable CNCS classes and sent notifications, processed 36 CNCS student-mentor grads (refund checks, mentor package, certificates mailed etc), and continues to help Howard with his orientation. Howard Robins worked with Jerry to cut the backlog of graduation certificates, and began responding to cce(a)arrl.org, to better understand day-to-day operations, and possibly help find new methods to save time. This is imperative what with the growth in registrants, and active future course promotion we'll be doing. The members-only web survey to measure members' interest in new course topics goes live Saturday, and will run through 10/27. Thanks to Jon for assisting, and to Rick for getting the word out. To make prospective students more aware of activities required to pass the courses, Howard began work with Tom Hogerty posting on-line the list of activities with other course details. The Education and Technology Program Jerry Hill completed his QST article on the latest with Education and Technology Program. The school reflector is now operational, and all Program schools signed on. Jerry is receiving suggestions from them as to the format, such as having a digest to cut down on the volume. The curriculum committee's work is in the hands of our graphics staff; they are working on drawings. For the Board's information, tomorrow morning (Tuesday) between approximately 8:00 am and 11:00 am the power to the HQ building will be shut off by Connecticut Light and Power Company as they perform work on the lines outside the building. Accordingly, we will be closed first thing in the morning. The work is intended to rectify some power line noise issues we are experiencing. For people calling the main number at HQ, the message on the answering machine (the one that's on battery back-up) will inform them of the outage and our approximate completion time of the work. 73, Barry, N1VXY

Hi All, If an e-mail came from me with a virus attached, it was sent from my address book while I was not at the computer. I was again hit while I was down stairs. When I returned I received about 40 to 50 e-mails and some being alerts. I am so sorry and I am disconnecting my modem from the telephone line when not in use until I exchange virus software.
