[arrl-odv:28370] Spying On WINLINK

Hello ODV, This was writtenand just forwarded to me by a ham in my Division. I have not reviewed this yet, so don’t shootthe messenger. He has done some creditable work in the past. Thanks, 73,Greg, W4OZK Thanks to all the workthat jeff, leland and I did, our text of how anyone can spy on WINLINK,and how WE DID IT OURSELVES is now published on AMAZON. You can read it forfree from our website -- its copyright onlyprohibits commercial usage -- https://www.qsl.net/nf4rc/2019/SpyingOnWINLINKV1.1.pdf You can purchase it onAMAZON in paperback (if you really have to have a printed copy): https://www.amazon.com/dp/1080563199 You can purchase it onAMAZON in KINDLE for $1:Spying on WINLINK | | | | | | | | | | | Spying on WINLINK What it takes to spy on WINLINK -- and how we proved it can be done! This is version 2, with slight improvements... | | | It is just now all inthe process of getting "for sale" on Amazon, so "searching forit" may not work yet, and the kindle and paperback versions are not yetlinked. But it tells thecomplete details of how a monitoring system of on-the-air WINLINK could beconstructed by modifying already available source code. It explains howthe WINLINK system moves data error-free WITHOUT ENCRYPTION. The textshows how we figured out how to PROVE it wasn't encrypted, and successfullySPIED on a winlink transmission -- without even writing one line ofcode.... That is not easy, but we are not professionalprogrammers. EVERY EMAIL that goes through the Central winlinksystem from USA is ALREADY available on a WEB VIEWER --- so we did this just toprove to the skeptics that YOU CAN SPY ON WINLINK.... and if you want tobadly enough, you could build a system that spies on tons of it!!! All told, we havespied on FIVE winlink transmissions -- even ONE proves it isn'tencrypted. We would have done more, but our lazy-man's way ofspying without writing a lick of code depends on some timing remaining linkedfor many seconds. Interested parties maynow provide copies of the PDF for non-commercial usage as they wish; mayprovide the text for non-commercial usage through their web servers or whateversuits them. We wanted more FACTS in the discussion that isongoing. Cheers, Gordon Gibby KX4Z

Thanks Greg. One big thing that doesn’t add up with this is that we’ve asked ARSFI and SCS to do the same thing and they’ve come up empty. I’m not convinced unless we see it first hand for ourselves. There have been requests for an OTA decoding test to happen at W1AW. It never happened. And in my opinion, traffic that can’t practically be decoded or otherwise be made available for inspection goes against the open nature of amateur radio, not to mention doesn’t allow for any kind of enforcement. 73, Ria N2RJ On Mon, Jul 15, 2019 at 12:20 PM Greg Sarratt <gsarratt@att.net> wrote:
