[arrl-odv:34023] "High Profile" Hams

We are continuing to plan a monthly column for 2023 to profile hams to are high profile in society or have accomplished something major outside of amateur radio. We have been collecting names but we'd like to hear from you. Naturally Joe Taylor, K1JT leaps to mind as he has earned a Nobel Prize in radio astronomy. We also have Dirk Basting, N4AN who developed the Excimer laser used in LASIK eye surgery today. Even multi-billionaire Michael Bloomberg was influenced early in life by amateur radio and a love for science, leading to an electrical engineering degree, onto building Bloomberg LP. https://www.npr.org/2012/04/06/150123935/new-york-citys-mayor-is-a-geek-at-h... Please think about hams in your division that would meet this criteria. We'd like to interview them and bring the possibilities of a life influenced by radio communications and technology to light for both our members and for our teachers/youth. Thanks David

Ted Rappaport, N9NB - basically the father of 5G. Yes, he has clashed with the ARRL Board on occasion but he is actually very well respected including by the FCC commissioners and others. Ted founded the wireless research institute at NYU Tandon, which has completely transformed the profile of the university into a world-class research facility. When I was a student there, the ECE department played second fiddle to ChemE because of the research on polymers. But Ted turned that completely around and now NYU wireless is pushing a new frontier in 5G and beyond. And he's even reactivated the ham radio club. Walter Cronkite (KB2GSD) would have been nice to profile if he were still alive. However my understanding is that ARRL has used him extensively in the past. But he may deserve an honorable mention. David, Two that come to mind from the west coast are David Leeson W6NL founder and CEO of California Microwave and James Treybig W6JKV who I believe started Tandem Computers. Rod is correct regarding Jimmy, W6JVK. Jimmy and Dick Hanson, K5AND, were the founders of the original Six Meter BBQ that was held in Austin for over 30 years. _______________________________________ John Robert Stratton N5AUS Director West Gulf Division Office:512-445-6262 Cell:512-426-2028 P.O. Add to this Bud Tribble, N6SN, MD PhD, original Macintosh engineer (his signature is on the inside case of the original Mac) and recently retired VP at Apple. He also sits on the RF Safety Committee. Seth Shostak, N6UDK, Senior Astronomer and Institute Fellow at the SETI Institute. Also, maker and serial entrepreneur Jeri Ellsworth, AI6TK. Dear ODV Members: While the achievements of Silent Keys is laudatory, I urge that this proposed 2023 profile series focus on contemporaries, especially those who have contributed to the betterment of Amateur Radio in the past two decades. We have an image problem that Amateur Radio is dated, and profiles of living individuals will go a long way to helping to show that Amateur Radio is exciting, inspirational and relevant in the 21st century. My two nominees for consideration come from the public service sphere. First is Ms. Jenean Hampton, K5EIB, Kentucky’s first African American woman Lt. Governor. She is an industrial engineer by profession and an Air Force veteran. Better yet, she holds an Extra class license, has been active in ARES and is an ARRL member. My second recommendation is former FEMA Director Craig Fugate, KK4INZ. He is likely the highest level federal official in the past decade to advocate for Amateur Radio in EmCOMM responses. His May, 2020 editorial in The Hill, a website considered influential in federal government circles, underscores his support for Amateur Radio. https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/499477-craig-fugate-emergency-commun... Bill, I think both of your suggestions are right on the mark. Jenean Hampton was our keynote speaker at the Kentucky State ARRL Convention while she was in office. She did 20 minutes off the cuff and it was very pro ham radio. While she and I were talking prior to her presentation, I asked her about her vanity call, and yes, it is "Excellence in Broadcasting". 73, Dale WA8EFK On 8/26/2022 9:19 AM, Morine, Bill, N2COP (VD, RK) wrote:

I agree, she would be excellent. Also add to the list, Steve Herman W7VOA. He has been an advocate for ham radio but is also a prominent working journalist - he was the WH bureau chief at the VOA but also spent time on the ground at the Fukushima Daiichi nuke plant covering the event. Jamie Dupree, NS6T would be another. Apart from his journalism credentials he has also overcome a severe speech impediment and persevered in his career in journalism but also in ham radio. Others have made lists of such people. Put "famous radio hams" into Google or any search engine. There will be a good number of sites with lists. Probably most of those individuals suggested here on ODV are contained in the lists. 73, Dick, N6AA Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Thu, Aug 25, 2022 at 7:47 AM, Minster, David NA2AA (CEO)<dminster@arrl.org> wrote: <!--#yiv2260225338 _filtered {} _filtered {}#yiv2260225338 #yiv2260225338 p.yiv2260225338MsoNormal, #yiv2260225338 li.yiv2260225338MsoNormal, #yiv2260225338 div.yiv2260225338MsoNormal {margin:0in;font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;}#yiv2260225338 a:link, #yiv2260225338 span.yiv2260225338MsoHyperlink {color:#0563C1;text-decoration:underline;}#yiv2260225338 span.yiv2260225338EmailStyle17 {font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;color:windowtext;}#yiv2260225338 .yiv2260225338MsoChpDefault {font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;} _filtered {}#yiv2260225338 div.yiv2260225338WordSection1 {}--> We are continuing to plan a monthly column for 2023 to profile hams to are high profile in society or have accomplished something major outside of amateur radio. Hi David, I would like to suggest Dr. Robert Dixon, W8ERD. Bob is the past Director, Ohio State University Radio Observatory and Technical Advisor to The SETI League, Inc. I would also suggest Nancy Rabel Hall, KC4IYD. Working at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH, starting out as a research scientist in the Space Experiment Division. Currently she is a project manager for several International Space Station experiments that are studying the behaviour of liquid crystals, two phase flow, flow boiling and condensation systems and how these fluids and systems behave differently in microgravity as compared to here on Earth. She is also president of the NASA Glenn Amateur Radio club where they have helped 2 local schools contact the International Space Station through ARISS.
