[arrl-odv:28161] Amateur radio coverage in IEEE-HKN's The Bridge magazine

Dear Officers, Directors and Vice-Directors, I thought that you might be interested in seeing the latest issue of IEEE-HKN's The Bridge magazine. Eta Kappa Nu (ΗΚΝ) or IEEE-HKN is the international honor society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with over 200,000 members. This issue is devoted to amateur radio. Bob NQ1R and I worked with them and ARRL has good coverage! http://connect.ieee.org/CPf0040A30RG0Uak3E03H01 73, Howard, WB2ITX -- Howard E. Michel, WB2ITX Chief Executive Officer ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio® 225 Main Street, Newington, CT 06111-1494 USA Telephone: +1 860-594-0404 email: hmichel@arrl.org

Great news, Howard. I’ve also been talking up ham radio among local IEEE groups. I gave a talk the other day at IEEE-CNNJ and got a lot of interest. One was even a ham who got his tech ticket and had forgotten about it. I found it somewhat disheartening that today we have to market ham radio to engineers. Years ago it was almost a given that RF and electrical engineers would at least know about ham radio. 73 Ria N2RJ On Tue, May 14, 2019 at 7:16 PM Michel, Howard, WB2ITX (CEO) < wb2itx@arrl.org> wrote:

Ria, I agree that it is disheartening. It is also puzzling is that companies reportedly have difficulty finding engineers who really understand something about RF. Maybe the ready availability of “reference designs” from the big IC makers has made it unnecessary for those using them to understand how those designs work. If more of them were hams, I think there would be better designs out there—including better output spectral purity and input immunity from overload and decreased sensitivity to off-channel interference. The Maker movement seems to have taken up ham radio more readily than degreed engineers. Maybe as hams we’re seen as too empirical and not theoretical enough. Truth is, hands-on work gets things done; the Makers are proof of that, in the same spirit as ham radio. 73, Greg, K0GW On Tuesday, May 14, 2019, rjairam@gmail.com <rjairam@gmail.com> wrote:

Kudos to you and Bob. Engineering students ought to be a target group fir Amateur Radio. This issue of IEEE-HKN is spot on. 73, Jay, K0QB Sent from my iPad
