[arrl-odv:32079] Recognizing Silent Keys

Director Ritz made the suggestion that we don't go far enough to recognize the contributions that our Silent Keys made if they were Maxim Society and/or Diamond Club members. As this is our final goodbye to these members, we were really excited about the idea. Attached is the mockup of what we will be rolling out going forward. Note: this is just test data, not an actual page with real data. The Silent Keys will be recognized with their Maxim Society and Diamond Club designations along side their callsign and name. We appreciate your ideas! Thanks David

I like it. I can see this driving behavior among living members. Could this also be an opportunity to note bequests? It would probably be best not to mention bequests, since these aren't generally certain and quantifiable until a year or two after the death. Gotta give the lawyers time to work their magic ... I would also ask if we are going to check to see if the member asked to remain anonymous. I seem to recall having that option not to have my name printed in the report. Mark, HDX On Tue, Mar 2, 2021 at 10:27 AM Mike Raisbeck via arrl-odv < arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> wrote:

I agree with this. Certainly, when I am gone there are things I do not want excessively memorialized about me in a public manner. 73 Ria, N2RJ On Tue, Mar 2, 2021 at 1:42 PM Mark J Tharp <kb7hdx@gmail.com> wrote:

My understanding that people have to request to have someone put on the list and there is a process for. At least I had to do so when my dad passed a year ago and I had opportunity to provide the form and information to someone who just learned of the SK listing for their spouse that past last fall. She saw it in a recent QST and thought that would be a good tribute to him. Hopefully her sending the SK listing will also cancel his life membership so she doesn't continue to get QST. My whole point to David was related to seeing Jim Tiemstra, K6JAT, in the SK listings a few months ago where he was shown merely as a "life member" with the diamond next to his name, as were others that month. He was so much more than that, he was a high level Maxim Society member as well. I'm sure many others listed every month are Diamond or higher as well, and in my eyes they deserve some final recognition for their extra contributions to the League. Also, the intent is also, as Director Baker has noted, that "Gee, If I become a Diamond member, I'll be specially recognized when I become a SK!" Morbid but a selling point, and final "benefit", so to say. ;-) I guess the family can always decline any extra listing beyond the bare minimum. 73; Mike W7VO

Looks good, This provides me an opportunity to pass along a suggestion I recently received from a life member. He suggests we list the SK's on page 73 of QST as a way to say our final 73 to the individual. Not sure if that has been discussed before or how it messes with the QST layout, just sharing the idea. I like this but I agree with the sentiment of of others. When someone becomes Diamond or Maxim, etc., they should be asked if they want to be recognized for that contribution when their name is listed in QST. I wouldn't say "when your key goes silent." May I also suggest that you add one more symbol to indicate a past ARRL Director or Officer -- although that may become cluttered. Art On 3/2/2021 12:10 PM, Minster, David NA2AA (CEO) wrote:

I might be wrong, but Maxim, Diamond, and Life are all indicated within the member data file. Being on ODV would require staff to do a search of archives to find that out. I don't think we even keep a record of past ODV members. Or if we do, it's not available to ODV or membership that I have found. Other than what is listed here: http://www.arrl.org/honorary-officials Either way, showing ODV tags would require an additional search for each and every listing in QST. It would be nice to show the past Director and VD in each division and while we are at it, Section managers. Perhaps that is an item that the next generation of the web site could include.
