[arrl-odv:24089] The Value of ARRL Membership

In January staff was asked to prepare a list of membership benefits that have been added since the last dues increase in 2001. I am pleased to send you "The Value of ARRL Membership," a nine-page paper that goes a bit beyond the simple list that some of you may have envisioned. If all you want is a list of bullet points you will find it on page 2, which can be used as a one-page standalone. You will find expanded discussion of the bullet points on pages 3 through 9. I want to thank Harold Kramer, Bob Inderbitzen, Diane Petrilli, and especially Sean Kutzko for providing me with considerable assistance in creating this document. As the principal author, Sean had to bear the slings and arrows of the rest of us as we worked our way through several drafts and challenged one another to defend the accuracy of every statement.. How you use it is, of course, up to each of you but I hope you will find it useful in the months ahead. Once the Board has decided in July what the membership dues will be for 2016 we will update the document accordingly. Your suggestions for revisions are welcome at any time. 73, David Sumner, K1ZZ Chief Executive Officer

I think this document is a very good job, and the list is impressive, as I expected it to be. It's good that those working on it challenged each other on what has been done, because it will surely be scrutinized by many to see if they can "catch us out." As some others have experienced, when I've discussed dues with clubs or at hamfests, I've found that people readily understand that an increase is overdue. But having this list and the backup explanations will be very useful as we talk to members. Please indicate the Board's thanks to Sean and the others responsible for putting this document together. 73, Greg, K0GW On Tue, Mar 17, 2015 at 1:56 PM, Sumner, Dave, K1ZZ <dsumner@arrl.org> wrote:

Thanks, Greg, and thanks for pointing out a couple of grammatical tweaks separately. We’ll fix those and any others that I hear about. 73, Dave K1ZZ From: Widin, Gregory, K0GW On Behalf Of G Widin Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2015 5:55 PM To: Sumner, Dave, K1ZZ Cc: arrl-odv Subject: Re: [arrl-odv:24089] The Value of ARRL Membership I think this document is a very good job, and the list is impressive, as I expected it to be. TNX Dave, This is perfect timing too as I "playing a tough house" this weekend in Acadian LA! Please extend my sincere gratitude to those who have worked to produce the document. 73 David A. I am embarrassingly way late on offering my kudos and thanks for a job well done on this document! I hope every board member is using this time to engage their membership about the forthcoming dues increase to set the stage ahead of time and remove any (honest) claims of blindsiding when the dues increase is authorized. Question: it seems that A&F has settled on the increase being $10, no? And we are pretty much set on making the increase happen in July. Again, to manage member expectations, can the amount and timeframe above be shared as part of our engagement, obviously only couched as "likely"? 73, Brian N5ZGT

Brian, In your message, you say: Question: it seems that A&F has settled on the increase being $10, no? And we are pretty much set on making the increase happen in July. $10 is the operating assumption. It has been used in all forecasts since the last Board meeting. Though it is still possible to change, a lot of work has been done with that assumption in mind, so if anyone is interested in changing it, there should be a good reason why another amount is preferable. Though A&F will make a recommendation to the Board in July, it is the Board who needs to make the final decision to change dues. 73, Greg, K0GW On Tuesday, April 7, 2015, Brian Mileshosky <n5zgt@swcp.com> wrote:

Understand. Question is, would it be appropriate to mention that dues increase "may" be to the tune of $10, and it "may" be decided on by the board in July and implemented at a later date? The first question members may have when talking about dues is "by how much, and when?" Would like to answer that in a likely but non-committal way if possible. Brian N5ZGT
