[arrl-odv:29536] Attracting new ARRL members

All, I thought this email received by Bob Allison was worth sharing with the board as a reminder of the importance of supporting all of the many & varied interests in amateur radio. Rod, K0DAS *From: Thomas Cathey <k1jj@comcast.net <k1jj@comcast.net>>* *Sent: Monday, February 3, 2020 4:14 PM* *To: Allison, Bob, WB1GCM <wb1gcm@arrl.org <wb1gcm@arrl.org>>* *Subject: Today I joined the ARRL again... * *Hi Bob -* *I want to let you know what a great job you and the people involved in the AM Rally did! What a success. I was so impressed by the ARRL’s overall support for the event that I became a member again. Please tell upper management to keep it going and AMer support for the League will pay big dividends over time.* *After years of anti-AM sentiment by the “old guard” (now mostly gone) I’m pleased to see the League embracing the mode again. It’s been several years now of good AM press so you have stood the test of time.* *I will be doing some posts encouraging others to renew their memberships as well as talking it up on the airwaves.* *BTW, Ed Hare, W1RFI was my first novice CW contact in 1964. We became buddies back then. Tell him WN1DGK says “hi” to WN1CYF (The Kid) and that he has done an impressive job as ARRL Lab Mgr over the last 30? years. Ham Radio has played a big role in many of our lives.* *73 and all the best,* *Tom Cathey, K1JJ* *Marlborough, CT*

Loved listening to all of the AM signals. I was invited to go to W1AW but after the hoosick hamfest it was just too much driving... Maybe next time. BTW I do run “heavy metal” here but modern gear - SDR and LDMOS amp running class “AAB” which is closer to class A but has AB efficiency. I sometimes get on AM, encouraged into the dark side by a few friends. Was also nice to hear Timtron on (WA1HLR, of WBCQ fame). He was quite strong here, but a bit wide. 73 Ria, N2RJ On Tue, Feb 4, 2020 at 11:21 AM Rod Blocksome <rod.blocksome@gmail.com> wrote:

My first phone QSO was on AM. Crystal controlled on 40 meters. I can still remember to this day how excited I was. I rode my bicycle home from school at lunch to check and see if my general license had arrived in the mail. It did, and I got on 40 meters AM to make my first phone QSO during my lunch period. Am I that old? Geez.... But it was GREAT! 73Rick - K5UR -----Original Message----- From: rjairam@gmail.com <rjairam@gmail.com> To: Rod Blocksome <rod.blocksome@gmail.com> Cc: arrl-odv <arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> Sent: Tue, Feb 4, 2020 10:41 am Subject: [arrl-odv:29538] Re: Attracting new ARRL members Loved listening to all of the AM signals. Oh, and I ran AM on 6 meters for a number of years with a homemade KW (pair of 4-400's) laying on my bedroom floor. I tore up every TV set and church PA system for miles in my little town at the foot of the Ozark Mountains. We were on the fringe of TV reception which made matters worse. My Dad would get telephone calls from miles away. Ha! Memories.... I'll bet Rod Blocksome remembers those days. 73Rick - K5UR -----Original Message----- From: k5ur <k5ur@aol.com> To: rjairam <rjairam@gmail.com>; rod.blocksome <rod.blocksome@gmail.com> Cc: arrl-odv <arrl-odv@reflector.arrl.org> Sent: Tue, Feb 4, 2020 11:19 am Subject: Re: [arrl-odv:29538] Re: Attracting new ARRL members My first phone QSO was on AM. Oh yes, I certainly do. But about 1963 I converted an ARC-5 command transmitter to DSB running 8 Watts PEP on 75 meters. It was an "eye opener" for me. About 15 years ago the Collins ARC decided to do a special event using Art's former call sign, W0CXX, on AM using a 32V-3 feeding an amplifier throttled back to legal PEP and a Sabre Log Periodic at 100 ft. I did a 4-hour shift and went home with a splitting headache from all the hetrodynes in the pile-ups. Until then I had no idea how many AM stations were active. But it did "peg my fun-meter" Check out this reflector to see some additional comments on ARRL membership and AM operations: http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=45579.0 73's, Rod, K0DAS On Tue, Feb 4, 2020 at 11:38 AM <k5ur@aol.com> wrote:

Oh, and I ran AM on 6 meters for a number of years with a homemade KW (pair of 4-400's) laying on my bedroom floor. I tore up every TV set and church PA system for miles in my little town at the foot of the Ozark Mountains. We were on the fringe of TV reception which made matters worse. My Dad would get telephone calls from miles away.
Ha! Memories.... I'll bet Rod Blocksome remembers those days.

Hi Bob -
I want to let you know what a great job you and the people involved in the AM Rally did! What a success. I was so impressed by the ARRL’s overall support for the event that I became a member again. Please tell upper management to keep it going and AMer support for the League will pay big dividends over time.
After years of anti-AM sentiment by the “old guard” (now mostly gone) I’m pleased to see the League embracing the mode again. It’s been several years now of good AM press so you have stood the test of time.
I will be doing some posts encouraging others to renew their memberships as well as talking it up on the airwaves.
BTW, Ed Hare, W1RFI was my first novice CW contact in 1964. We became buddies back then. Tell him WN1DGK says “hi” to WN1CYF (The Kid) and that he has done an impressive job as ARRL Lab Mgr over the last 30? years. Ham Radio has played a big role in many of our lives.
73 and all the best,
Tom Cathey, K1JJ Marlborough, CT
