[arrl-odv:20022] Latest Info on LightSquared vs GPS Users

30 JUN 2011 - 1957 CDT Granted this is not an issue for the ARRL or Amateur Radio in general, it bears watching. I have attached the second AWST article on this subject to this message I have forwarded to you. The information might be handy to have when you are asked questions about this issue. Happy 4th of July to all of you and your families! - Dick Isely, W9GIG

Here is another article that reflects the reports that were issued yesterday. http://www.mbtmag.com/Content.aspx?id=2934&et_cid=1757903&et_rid=8246057 4&linkid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.mbtmag.com%2fContent.aspx%3fid%3d2934 If you're REALLY interested in the subject go to http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/ and click on "Search for Filings." Then in the "Proceeding number" window enter "11-109" and you will find the reports broken up into 7 files totaling more than 1,000 pages. While members of course want their GPS devices to continue to work, the principle of basing allocations decisions on receiver susceptibility to overload is very dangerous. GPS interference could also significantly affect the accuracy of amateur radio based APRS systems used for public service. As the Garmin engineer in the article stated, retrofitting even very inexpensive filters into existing devices, in our case handhelds, would be very expensive and time consuming. ("Bronson Hokuf, an engineer with GPS maker Garmin Ltd., also said it would be nearly impossible retrofit hundreds of millions of existing GPS devices already in use. The working group said installing new filters in GPS equipment used for aviation, for instance, would be very expensive and could take at least 10 years.") Retrofitting tiny handheld circuitry is no longer tinkerer's option for the average ham. So we do in fact have a dog in this fight. Sent from Gary's iPhone 4. I have been following the LightSquared situation on my "Urgent Communications Today" Newsletter. I have tried to send links to ODV, but the links are quite large and cumbersome. I apologize, but here it is: <http://urgentcomm.com/networks_and_systems/commentary/lightsquareds-new-gps -plan-20110630/index.html?cid=nl_uctoday&YM_MID=1243410&YM_RID=jboehner@dues outh.net> It is good to see another organization (The Coalition to save our GPS) fighting this battle. Although not discussed in this article, there was a rumor that LightSquared is near bankruptcy. Guess that's why they have "come out swinging"! This will be a good news story to watch, as it is exceedingly unlikely that the millions (billions?) of GPS users will be compensated for retrofitting their units to deal with the potential interference! On the other hand, we hope that all GPS manufacturers will engineer their newer units to deal with future interference potential. Good article. "Also, it has been alleged that some GPS devices are overly sensitive and thus prone to interference from LightSquared’s operations." These "overly sensitive" units would be the GPS glass cockpits guiding your and my aircraft to Hartford in a week or so. Gary KI4LA GLD Vice Director Sent from Gary's iPad 2.
