In case you haven't heard, Bob Heil, K9EID, became a silent key yesterday. He was an amazingly talented individual and supporter of Ham radio. This was the announcement from Heil Radio: "Our beloved founder, Dr. Bob Heil, K9EID, is now a Silent Key. Bob fought a valiant, year-long battle with cancer, and passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Bob’s lifelong passion for amateur radio was clear to everyone involved in the hobby. Everything Bob did for the betterment and growth of amateur radio - from his instructional handbooks and countless presentations to his support of the ARRL and youth programs - was based on the foundation and spirit of service. Bob was an Elmer to all of us. While Bob’s presence will dearly be missed, his impact on the hobby and everyone in it will forever be felt. On behalf of Bob to all ham radio operators worldwide, 73. Bob and Marc, Having recently represented the ARRL at the largest hamfest in the Midwest (St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club) Winterfest Hamfest and ARRL Midwest Division Convention, as well as having met with the members of an up and coming college radio club at St. Louis University, W0FLN, I would like to receive an update from you on the forthcoming revisions to the ARRL Membership Fee Schedule with respect to the following two categories so as to better inform our members and potential members: 1. Free Student "Associate Membership” - to be available to those applicants 21 years of age and younger who are full time students 2. No it is not. I get 2 or 3 phone calls a week and also emails on this. Some members are not paying attention I find, as it is "news" to them when they inquire to HQ about their QST copy, despite the public rancor. All complain that this is a unilateral cancellation even though they would agree (I ask) to raise the cost of delivery in the future. My call yesterday is typical. A retired EE who worked on the Iridium satellite system said he can easily afford the extra delivery price (and he will pay) but the unethical change in the deal irked him. The argument that this is a service and not a subscription presents an issue without impact on the real complaint that they purchased a QST mail copy specifically without reserve to adjust mail to digital delivery. The echoes from this complaint just add to the discontent. When I renewed my membership / subscription / benefit there was nothing said on that renewal about an additional fee at that time to continue the printed magazine past the January issue. It was a totally normal, traditional renewal. Why would I think the ARRL would ever even pull such a stunt? Why do so many other people think the same thing? Why would ARRL even OFFER a partial printed magazine membership renewal, essentially stating "hey, if you want your magazines past date "x" you need to submit an additional 25 bucks, and for that 25 bucks, were only giving you 6 more magazines even though you paid for 12 initially, and this additional 25 which should cover 12 is really only covering the last 6. Really? THATS the underlying argument Im supposed to believe? That doesnt even make sense. Had that been plainly stated somehow, I would have never renewed. In addition, when ARRL curtails peoples printed copies like that, why would anybody pay another 25 bucks on top of what they already paid when ARRL doesnt honor agreements? Maybe in a couple months ARRL will decide THATS not enough and hold me up for another 50% increase in the middle of their NEW agreement. No thanks. There is no way you or anybody else can spin this to make it anything besides breach of contract, theft, lies, deception, and a total disregard for doing the right thing by your membership, or what common sense business practices would be. AND.... dont even try arguing about what common sense is. If you want to change to your current subscription structure - sorry, member benefit structure, go for it. If you want an additional 25 bucks on top of membership in order to receive the printed magazine, thats totally fine. Do it, make it clear, and institute it as people renew. HOWEVER, you dont get to deceptively entice people to renew, and then sneak in a change to the agreement midstream. You need to honor agreements that were already made. There is no way around that. My comments stand - anybody involved with doing this and who does not want to honor peoples original subscription agreement, oh, sorry, member benefit (some benefit - thats even more laughable) is a thief and a liar. At this point I am so done with the ARRL. It is inconceivable to me that you all sat around and thought this was a good idea, and worse that you refuse to recognize the error and make it right. Wow. Oh well. I have no further interest in the ARRLs website or any thing else they offer or have anything at all to do with. I dont do business with thieves, nor will I ever. I will also be certain that everybody I come in contact with in the amateur radio world is aware of ARRL's slimy, untrustworthy, new practices and that ARRL's agreements are worthless. You can order something and if the price goes up before they ship, they will not deliver and not refund. They will withhold the product, keep your money, and attempt to extort the price increase from you. The only way I will ever even consider having anything to do with ARRL again, is when I see every single person in ARRL management from the top down removed from office. Staring at a computer screen drives my eyes crazy and I will not subscribe to a digital only magazine, nor will I pay what amounts to a double rate increase in order to have the "luxury" of a printed magazine. I find it hilarious that in a time when we are all supposed to be all diverse and equitable and inclusive that you choose to make those who cant stare at computer screens pay a substantial additional cost in order to get a printed magazine. That's comical. Well, I will look forward to getting my refund for the balance of my printed subscription if there is a balance, Im not sure. John, Members have been asking if they could/should be writing their congressman in support of the HOA bills. My gut feeling is that that probably isn't necessary until we know the bills are coming up for a vote. I'd appreciate your advice.
