I know we have no say in how these petitions are presented, but I hope the petition designers realize what market they are going for. If they are going for Amateur Radio Ops, a graphic of a beam is going to get the most powerful positive reaction; but it will probably get a very powerful negative reaction from non-hams. A graphic of amateur radio ops in the field assisting with disaster operations would elicit a much more positive response from non-hams. To us, a beam is a sign of beauty. To others…..not so much. Late last year Chris indicated that this bill could act as a “cover” for the FCC to move forward with their own authority. I have not seen this mentioned since the bill came out. Is there any new information on this? HR.4969 will provide that guidance, and give PRB-1 the force of Federal law. Radio amateurs, while providing a valuable and necessary service to their communities, are frequently and increasingly precluded from installing necessary equipment (antennas, coax, etc) by unreasonable private land-use restrictions, including restrictive CC&R covenants. I know you all join me in expressing to Jim our heartfelt appreciation for all he has done for the ARRL and Amateur Radio over the past 12 years, and for many years prior to his becoming Director for that matter. Some years ago and early in my ARRL career Jim wrote a ham radio column in the Cincinnati newspaper. As per Rick’s request, what follows below are my instructions to the members, and then the actual template/form letter that they should email to their Representative. You can tailor your emails by signing on to www.arr.org/odv When you do a mass-email, it can be set-up by Congressional District in the lower right hand corner. Make certain that you do that, otherwise it goes to the entire Division. To get the total amount of hams in a particular district, do the following: - You must be logged in. - Go to www.arrl.org/grassroot-members - On the right hand side of the page, click on “Query Addresses” - On the new page, you will see three dialogue boxes. Set it for FCC Licenses, State, and District. Ask for a pdf printout. Multiply the amount of pages generated by 30. That is the approximate license count in the District. That is the number that gets plugged into the template BEFORE YOU EMAIL IT TO THE MEMBERSHIP. You also need to go to the each Representative’s website and get the link to their email. You can get the Congressman/woman’s name on the regular mass-email page. It’s time consuming work (I’ve got 32 of them), but it is so much more effective if it’s done on a personal level. By the way, the template has XXXX in areas that need to be filled in with the correct name and data. Be sure to proofread before clicking on the final send button. It’s very easy to get confused when doing many of these emails at the same time.
