The first Spectrum Defense Matters (SDM) newsletter is expected to mail
July 2 to 50,000 members. Following that mailing an email will be
prepared with a link to the current SDM which will be posted in the
Development section of the website. The goal for Spectrum Defense for
2010 is $325,000. Issues of the newsletter are planned for September
and November.
Planning has begun for the 2010 Education & Technology Fund campaign to
mail at the end of August. This campaign will be 75,000 pieces in a new
6x9 format.
A repeat of the successful Diamond Club letter that was mailed in
February will be mailed in September to lapsed Diamond Club donors and
those up for renewal in the last half of 2010. The letter highlights
the monthly or quarterly giving option on a credit card as an easy was
to renew or upgrade unrestricted support for ARRL through the Diamond
Club.

GJK installed four new LMR-600 transmission lines for the D Star system.
One line is for 2M right now-the others will be used for 70cm voice,
23cm voice, and 23 cm data. BA brought in his D Star radio into the lab
for demos-visit the lab if you want to see it in action.
GJK installed a direct run from a newly installed HF vertical (courtesy
of JPC) to CBS's office-Chuck can now confirm intruder watch reports
from his office.

Sales and Marketing
Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R
A quarterly review with our QST printing and distribution vendor, RR
Donnelley, was attended by Amy Hurtado and Deb Jahnke last week. The
review covered paper market trends and forecasting, Distribution Center
operational updates and USPS rate changes for 2011, operations report on
advertising ideas and production questions. Also discussed was how
market trends in printing and distribution will affect ARRL. For
budgeting, expect a 5-7% increase in postage for periodicals and 3-5%
for other classes of mail effective January 1, 2011. Paper is on the
rise due to mill closings and stronger demand RRD estimates an increase
going into 2011 at 2.00/lb.
August QST is on schedule to mail July 6th thru the 13th.
The membership certificate maker is finally up on the new Web site. The
next step is for Fathom to put it in the member profile, with members'
other personal information.
Summer has begun. The 50,000 piece membership mailing sent the second
week in June is returning slowly - only 173 applications have been
returned so far.
Diane is working on getting advertising rates and samples of possible
advertising options for the fall. Included on the list are Homeland
Security Today, Road King Magazine, Overdrive, Truckers News, Trailer
Life and Motor Home.
To encourage end of month sales, a summer-themed email solicitation
offering $5 Flat Rate Shipping was sent out early last week. The email
featured a handful of new titles: ARRL's PIC Programming for Beginners,
Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio, and Remote Operating for Amateur
Radio, as well as other popular ARRL publications. A follow-up email
was sent out Friday, encouraging last chance orders before the special
offer ends.
A TravelPlus for RepeatersTM special upgrade offer has mailed to 6,800
previous customers, offering the 2010/2011 Edition at a special price of
$19.95 (plus shipping and handling).
During the last week, the warehouse team fulfilled d 861 packages for

W1AW
Field Day at W1AW was a success! 2,879 contacts were made on 80 to 2
meters using CW, Phone and RTTY for an initial claimed score of 3,829.
Lisa Kustosik, KA1UFZ, operated W1AW's GOTA station. She made 100
contacts on 10 meters using SSB.
Thanks to HQ staffers Michael Corey, W5MPC, Michael Keane, K1MK,
Khrystyne Keane, K1SFA, Bill Moore, NC1L, Steve Sant Andrea, AG1YK, and
Joe Carcia, NJ1Q for their participation. Thanks also to two amateurs
from New Jersey: Cody Codianni, KC2LSD and Pete Gloistein, KC2PJH. They
were present at W1AW all weekend to operate Field Day.
Joe spent a few days preparing the station for the upcoming Field Day
event. He updated all the logging software on each PC and tested the
networking between them. He also made a few equipment changes to the
broadcast equipment to absolutely ensure that all bands were covered for
the Field Day bulletin transmissions.
Scott worked on fast and slow code practice files for the latter part of
the month of June and early July. He also assisted the DXCC department
with the editing of applications.
Field Organization/Public Service Team
Official Observers in Maine are investigating a case of interference to
public event communications on a local repeater there. Several updates
were received regarding interference on a local California 2 meter
repeater as well as on 75 meters there. The repeater to repeater
interference reported earlier in Northern New Jersey has been resolved.
Our Intruder Watch monitors are checking on a report that a US shortwave
broadcaster is splattering into the 15 meter band.
Wisconsin Section Leaders kept Headquarters in the loop on the Amateur
Radio emergency response to the severe weather and tornado that struck
Eagle, Wisconsin, on June 21. The Central Area Staff of the National
Traffic System conducted a teleconference and invited Field Organization
Team members to take part in the call.
Ballots and candidates statements for the Southern Florida and Ohio
Section Manager elections were printed this past week, and preparations
are underway for mailing them out.
Sincerely Compiled by,
Lisa Kustosik, KA1UFZ
