Apparently MyBackgroundCheck.com is sending an e-mail like the one shown below to everyone who had a Red Cross background check attempting to convince them to sign up for ongoing service. It says that the Red Cross does not require it, but I wonder how many will fall for it anyway? The mailing follows on the heels of a late August mailing that has already yielded a 1.7% return. A 2009 QST schedule has been approved and circulated to each of the groups with operational responsibility. The Statements of Ownership for all three periodicals (QST, NCJ and QEX) are due to the US Postal Service on October 1. The statements will be published in the periodicals before the end of the year. A publication and product mailing was released to the printer, to be mailed in early October to 70,000 leads. The mailing touts the 2009 Handbook, 50 Years of Innovation book and the General License Course on CD-ROM. The fall/winter Publications Catalog is expected to go to the printer by mid-week. The November issue of QST features two new ARRL publications: Basic Antennas--Understanding Practical Antennas and Design and The ARRL Satellite Handbook. Both are expected in-stock November 15. Now Shipping: The 2009 soft cover Handbook; the 2009 ARRL Calendar. During the week of 9/15, the Warehouse crew fulfilled 531 packages for publication and product orders, shipped 487 free book membership premiums, and sent October QST mailing supplements. Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N Contest Branch 193 logs have been received for the August UHF contest, including 23 paper logs. 323 logs have been received for the September VHF Contest. Deadline for log submissions is October 14. 10 GHz contest logs are beginning to roll in. Most are, predictably, coming in as paper logs; only 7 logs have been received electronically. Sean is attending the Pacific Northwest VHF Society Conference in Moses Lake, WA this weekend. He will make a presentation focusing on Contest Branch updates that pertain to VHFers, as well as promote the ARRL's Fred Fish Memorial Award. Sean will spend a couple days with Ward Silver, NØAX before the conference discussing long-range Contest Branch planning. He will return to HQ on Tuesday, October 7. W1AW No report. Field Organization/Public Service Team Team members are preparing for and coordinating plans for the ARRL Section Managers Workshop that will be held in Newington on October 10 -12. Field Organization Leaders across the country have been reporting their upcoming plans for their participation in the annual ARRL Simulated Emergency Test. The main focal-point weekend for the SET is October 4 5. Chuck Skolaut has been assisting with some regulatory-type questions while Dan, N1ND, is away from the office. A new Official Observer from Georgia completed certification requirements this past week. Official Observers in Oregon are investigating an interference report while reception reports of unlicensed users on 2 meter simplex frequencies are under the watchful eye of OOs in Louisiana. The course is in production and will be in inventory soon. Now our attention will turn to edits and functional changes needed in the Digital EmComm course to prepare it for production. Over 50 new licensing instructor and teacher registrations were received in the month of September. This brings the count of registered instructors and teachers to 3864. Suspension of the Level 3 EmComm course was announced to membership and change and update requests delivered to Dennis Dura for editorial consideration. The course is anticipated to be re-released in the first quarter. Kim Mancuso has coordinated an effort with mentors and CTDLC to close and remove 180 class sections from the WebMentor platform that have long since expired. She also was able to catch up on production of course completion certificates, mailing over two hundred last week. China Chaney started training with the Continuing Education Program to support the field exam function of the ARECC program. She will be processing field exams and sending field exam materials to ARECC field examiners. Education & Technology Program. Some schools are reporting success in capitalizing on their Teachers Institute experiences and resources into grants and funding of related programs within their schools. Mark Spencer has already received a good number of requests for information on hosting some of the Teachers Institutes next summer. He is trying to establish dates and venues for next summers TIs soon so that publicity can be started. Mark also reports that he has completed the re-work of the equipment used for the fox hunting demonstration during the TI, and has relayed the equipment modifications to instructors and teachers using the unit in their classrooms. He is starting production of modulation/demodulation boards to support grant requests and next years Teachers Institutes. ARISS. The ARISS team supported a QSO on September 13 for the Scout Space Jamboree at Chanute Air Force Base (IL) sponsored by the Prairielands Scout Council. Scouts worked on the Radio Merit Badge and studied robotics with the help of the Segway Company of Chicago. A spacewalk was approved for next year by NASA, ESA and RSA to install an antenna for ARISS on the ISS module, Columbus. During that spacewalk, an antenna will also be installed for ESAs Automatic Identification System (AIS) that provides ship identity, position and speed for helping with such things as oil spills. This spacewalk is currently planned for the end of Expedition 17. ESA is paying for the cost to launch the antennas and the cables. On September 13, the public was invited to Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, to attend Launchfest where ARISS team members set up one of many exhibits. How long will Phase 2 take to complete? Besides what you mentioned elsewhere in your email about the content teams (some of whom as you say are almost done with their jobs), what is consuming 7 entire months before content even starts to be built? 73, Brian N5ZGT Brian, To answer your question, we estimate that there are over 30,000 pages of content on our current web site that need to gone through. Some of these pages need to be replaced entirely and others need extensive revisions since the ARRL and Amateur Radio have changed since these documents and pages were created. Other areas of the new web site need to be built ground up and integrated into our current systems. This includes local content control for our staff. This is a large and complex project. We elected not to hire a full time project manager in-house to manage the project, so we are doing it with the help of Fathom's staff and our existing staff who have to also do their full-time jobs. Along with the content changes, we are running a concurrent path to make sure that the technical areas, particularly the back room databases and the integration with Siebel and other in-house ARRL systems are integrated and functional into the new site. Power was restored about 11:35 AM EDT. The telephone system operated off the backup generator, but calls could not be transferred from the operator's console. We're looking into how to improve that. W1AW was operational on its generator - in fact we had a guest operating on 20 meters during the outage. I'm told the Internet connection may be up and down today for an unrelated reason.
