Second, in January 222-225 MHz was proposed to have a 100-kHz bandwidth limitation. The current draft eliminates bandwidth limitations in this band, as in the case of the bands above 420 MHz. If you have any questions, fire away. We are going tomake a stink out of this. We're going to do whatever it takes for them to forget about this project," said Gross, who lives in Mount Morris. Princeton City Manager Andrew Brannen said he has heard of Gross' complaints but said the city is continuing on as scheduled. Any interference issues will be dealt with during a pilot program in a small area of the city, which should happen early next year. "We were well aware that there were some communities that had interference. It's a local issue. If it is present in our system, we will deal with it before we make it available citywide," Brannen said. Offering Internet service through electricity is a new technology. Gross said the Princeton project is the first of its kind in Illinois. Gross said he also wants to caution Princeton that because the city owns its electric system, it could face fines from the Federal Communications Commission if interference were to occur. A week ago, city officials announced they will begin contract negations with Connecting Point Computer Center in Peru to provide the Internet service. I think we should consider allowing (r) as a reasonable facsimile of the trademark symbol ®, especially in e-mail. This was the working rule in several companies I worked for, just because the symbol is so difficult to consistently reproduce in various systems, especially older e-mail systems. For those of you using Microsoft Word, there is a nice easy shortcut for the Trademark symbol Alt-Ctrl-R (alt + ctrl + the "r" key). Unfortunately, that doesn't work in Outlook or in many other Microsoft products. In my e-mail program (Eudora), I have to import the name from a Microsoft Word file. In other e-mail programs, people are going to have to remember a clumsy set of keystrokes (Alt and 4 numbers... I don't remember the exact values provided by Mr. Goddard). To make matters worse, you have to have num-lock on and use the numeric keypad for that "Alt" trick to work. On a laptop, the keypad is embedded in the regular keyboard, so when num-lock is on, you can't type those letters (on my keyboard, the numeric keypad is overlayed on letters m, j, k, l, u, i, o, and the numbers 7, 8, 9). Andy - One thing to keep in mind is that the Board motion does not mandate the use of the new ARES Winlink 2000 network, but encourages use of it as another tool (a very powerful tool!) in the ARES toolbox. It is a new system that is now available for use by ARES folks at all levels. An SM is in no way required to use the system and can stick to whatever plans they are currently using. As has been said about the new ARES network before, it will sell itself. As the use of the new network expands and the expanded capability and usefulness of the system becomes better known, those who are now reluctant to use it will likely be pressured by their constituents to take renewed looks at this new system. In the case of SMs, the members have an opportunity to replace them every 2 years.
