Be really careful opening attachments. This new MyDoom virus is spreading faster than anything we've ever seen. I have received the virus 6 times this morning in e-mails sent to my ARRL.ORG e-mail address. The e-mail is much better written than most, so it's fooling lots of people. One estimate is 1000 new infections per minute. 27 JAN, 2004 - 1145 CST This is the most rapidly spreading virus I have seen. When I downloaded my email a few minutes ago, I found my ISPs filter program had intercepted and destroyed 8 copies of this virus that was attached to 8 totally bogus email messages. I then had to manually destroy a 9th copy in a bogus message my ISP let pass. Be careful out there. An article in the Nov/Dec 2003 AMSAT Journal (pp 18-22) provides an outstanding summary of Amateur Radio involvement in the human spaceflight program. An international educational outreach program implemented by volunteers - great stuff. I couldn't find this paper posted on the internet, but it should be. 73, Art W6XD

Nice work, Jim. I had the pleasure of attending the SM Workshop with John Meyers back when I had the East Bay SM position, and I completely agree with your assessment. We have to take care of the folks out on the front line with the membership. Your experience with explaining the "why" of the decision matches mine. Many members actually blame the ARRL for the reduction of the code speed requirement to 5 WPM. There is very little understanding of why the FCC changed the requirement or that it's simply not an option that is on the table when we deal with them. We have a LOT of educating to do. Very few continue to argue points when I tell them that the FCC is not about to embark on anything that will cost them money, which includes having to change ULS or re-instituting the "special accommodation" process that goes along with higher code speed tests.
