Folks- Just so you won't be blindsided at the July Board meeting, the MSC, during its April 1 teleconference, decided to propose a major new award program: DXCC/Spam. The rules are straightforward. Any licensed radio amateur submitting proof of being spammed via ARRL domains from 100 or more different entities earns the award. There will be 3 award categories: a) the .net award b) the .org award c) the mixed award Administration of this award will not cost too much, at least in monetary terms. The LOTW software will be modified to accept electronic submittals. Award certificates will be available for download (certified virus free, natch) to successful applicants. Members actually will be in favor of not doing anything about Spam - if fact, Martti Laine may actually be planning some DXpeditions to new sites as we speak. Folks, we have to move quickly on this before IARU finds out and scoops us with a WAC/Spam award of their own. Due to a combination of factors, including the increasingly intolerable Washington commute and an intractable and greedy current landlord, the Law Offices of Booth, Freret, Imlay and Tepper, P.C. are moving and in a sense expanding. I am moving to a new office building I bought in Silver Spring, Maryland starting June 17, 2002. The 2001 ARRL DXCC Yearbooks are in the mail. Some of the highlights include the results of the DeSoto Cup. Bob Eshleman, W4DR, won for the 2nd year in a row with 2396 band countries. Austin Regal, N4WW, placed 2nd with 2360 and in 3rd place was Rick Roderick, K5UR with 2359 countries. As of December 31, 2001 824 DXers have qualified for the DXCC Challenge, with 1,000 band countries or more.

If you take Worldradio, go to page 23 of the July issue and read the letter to the editor, Apologies to ARRL The last paragraph of AA9UFs letter reads: My sincere apologies to President Haynie. I was impressed that he even reads Worldradio. I am further impressed by the various programs and ideas he has come up with since he became President of the ARRL. He is truly a forward thinking man. The decline in membership that Jim cites is about 3% whereas the dues increase (either $5 or $6 for most members) was 15% or more. As a very rough gauge, historically we have seen membership decline by 1% for every dollar of dues increase. Until the past two months we were doing somewhat better on membership than anticipated, largely the result of better-than-expected renewal rates even at the higher dues rates. Renewals have begun to come in at a somewhat slower pace; we suspect a hiccup in the postal distribution of a large batch of renewal notices earlier this year and are planning an additional mailing to those members. I was looking at the membership numbers today and quite frankly, I am really puzzled. We are down 5,089 from a year ago. Even at the old rate of $34 that is $173,000. At the $39 rate it is $198,471. The only good news is that Director Coy Day, N5OK just copied me on a message that he signed up 48 new members and 27 renewals and one family life member at Hamcom this past weekend. What is disappointing is that we have more to show why a ham should be a member now than ever before. As an organization, we have been very proactive as of late and maybe it is that we should be telling people that more in our forums.
