[arrl-odv:23533] Survey for strategic planning

One of the initiatives included in the 2014 operational budget/plan is a survey to provide a factual starting point for strategic planning next year. Readex Research has conducted surveys for us from time to time and we have asked them to do so once again. A draft of the survey form is attached for your information and review; we welcome suggestions. Once the survey is finalized, it will be mailed and emailed to approximately 12,000 radio amateurs in the United States. The research is designed to capture information from current, lapsed, and "never" members of ARRL in regard to their interests and activities, and how we might better meet the needs of all. Unlike previous national market studies we have done, this research will focus on specific segments of the overall Amateur Radio population. The populations from which the samples are drawn are approximately 106,000 members and 228,000 non-members (lapsed and never members) holding one of the currently available license classes: Technician, General or Extra Class. The lapsed member population will include approximately 5 years' worth of expired members. The never member population will include approximately 5 years' worth of licensees identified as "new" or having made a recent change or modification to their license. Excluded from the study are non-members who have had no FCC license activity (new license, renewal, upgrade, changed address, obtained a vanity call sign issue, etc.) in the past five years. The study will also follow a couple of micro segments, namely Technicians who have been a member for less than a year, Technicians who have maintained their membership for longer than a year, and Technicians who have lapsed after only one year of membership. Our hope is that the study will suggest what we should do differently to attract and retain more Technicians and new licensees as members. Current members will be reached by email/online, and lapsed and 'never' members will be reached exclusively by mail. The survey findings will be available to us toward the end of the first quarter of 2015. Readex will format the completed survey, so please do not pay close attention to formatting. Feedback should be directed to Bob Inderbitzen, rinderbitzen@arrl.org<mailto:rinderbitzen@arrl.org>, by Tuesday, December 2. 73, David Sumner, K1ZZ Chief Executive Officer

Dave, I know your note requested feedback by 12/2, but being that it's only 1 day late, I thought I'd send a comment anyhow. I feel that questions 27-30, which requested awareness/ value/ and performance ratings, don't seem to provide the respondent with a place to provide the requested information. Perhaps Readex has some format available to receive this information, but otherwise, some way needs to be added for respondents to note each of the 3 requested items for each benefit. As it stands, I don't think we'll get many people willing to wade through answering these important questions. I'm glad we're doing this survey. It will be very interesting to compare this one to those from previous decades. The responses should be helpful to us as we consider strategic planning in 2015. 73, Greg, K0GW On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, Sumner, Dave, K1ZZ <dsumner@arrl.org> wrote:
