[arrl-odv:19645] Senate bill introduced

As promised, the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2011 has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Lieberman and Collins and has been referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Its number is S.191. While the text of the bill is not yet available on Thomas, John Chwat has sent Kay and me a copy of the bill. Except for a couple of minor improvements in the introductory text it is identical to the bill, S.1755, that passed the Senate in 2009. For that reason we expect it to move quickly through the Senate and on to the House where it can be considered along with the similar House bill, H.R.81. You might think that letters to Senators would help, but John advises that the committee staff has things well in hand and it is best to let the bill proceed under the radar. Tactically it is best for us to wait until the Senate bill has passed and has been referred to the House before asking Representatives for their support, so we will not be mounting a letter-writing campaign right away. Even so, we will be publicizing the bill's introduction since it would be confusing for members to hear about the bill via other channels without a word about it from us. Dave K1ZZ
