[arrl-odv:28628] FCC DA 18-980 (Chinese radios import ban) - status?

Did we get any further with resolving the issue with using imported radios that did not have FCC certification? Specifically this: http://www.arrl.org/news/view/arrl-fcc-discussing-issue-of-uncertified-impor... This goes back to Imlay's tenure and I seem to recall that Dave SIddall was working on it. 73 Ria, N2RJ

Perhaps the question should be forwarded to Counsel Siddall since he has the contact at FCC. 73, Jay, K0QB Sent from my iPhone

I spoke to him, and we had an interesting conversation about this. It seems as though the FCC is very inflexible on the ruling but they want to accommodate the hams. So he’s still working on a resolution but is in search of ideas. Perhaps we can put our collective brain power and figure out something. The issue is that these radios are proliferating on amazon and other places and are being sold with wide frequency coverage. I’m thinking that one approach would be working with vendors to have the radios firmware locked to the ham bands. This would work for keeping these legal for importation for ham use. The downside of this now is that it will likely drive the “long range walkie talkie” buyers to the ham bands by default. Anyway it’s something to think about.
