Khrystyne Keane, K1SFA With the March issue of QST - our annual antenna issue -- going out the door next week, we have been quite busy with articles, columns and answering members' questions. Steve Ford, WB8IMY, attended Ham Radio University on January 10 in Bethpage, New York. This event is also the NLI Section convention. Steve attended a number of sessions and delivered the noontime keynote address to a standing-room-only audience. Khrystyne Keane wrote and produced the January 7 edition of The ARRL Letter and the ARRL Audio News. Staff Absentees: Joel Hallas has jury duty on Friday, February 26. Lab Reported by Ed Hare, W1RFI RFI George Munsch, W5VPR has completed a companion workbook for the Power-Line Noise Mitigation Handbook for Naval and Other Receiving Sites. This document pertains to locating radio interference from non-power line related sources. He has offered it to us and indicated we can add it to our Web site. Although not directly related to Amateur Radio, the FCC had issued a citation to Duke Energy involving power line noise. The FCC had ordered the lines to be shut down in this case. The lines were near Raleigh-Durham Airport and the interference was disrupting air navigation devices. MG continued working on the EMC Committee Semi-Annual Report. Product Review Testing This week Bob Allison removed the Product Review Test equipment and delivered it to Essco Laboratories in Chelmsford MA on January 7 for calibration. He delivered the equipment personally to minimize the impact on the product review test schedule. The equipment will be returned on January 20th. After several years of Lab cart flat tires, Bob Allison and Mike removed the tires for tube replacement. They will be repaired at a local tire shop while the Lab test equipment is away for calibration. Bob Allison worked with Steve Ford to produce the Product Review video that we post on You-Tube each month. This popular post gets thousands of hits each month. Bob Allison cleaned up and checked up a pulse generator from an estate-Bob has plans to use it to test noise blankers in receivers-he can simulate ignition noise. Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N W1AW On Wednesday, Matt Strelow, KC1XX and Andrew Toth - both of XX Towers Inc. - were on hand to inspect the Satellite elevation rotator. (The rotator stopped functioning in December.) When placed on the bench, it was determined that some form of "pest" had gotten into the rotator and caused the failure of the motor. A somewhat-dated elevation rotator was temporarily installed back on the Satellite tower until the new rotator can be repaired and replaced during the Spring antenna visit. Joe finished construction of the IRLP-node relay box and installed it on the IRLP PC and radio. He also constructed a new Harris panel with a new Yaesu FT-2900R 2-meter FM transceiver. This transceiver is now in use for all of W1AW's 2-meter broadcast transmissions. Joe also worked the early afternoon/night shifts on Monday and Tuesday for the vacationing Scott Gee. Scott worked on slow and fast code practice files for the middle part of the month of January. He also archived all the 2009 bulletin files. Field Organization/Public Service Team As the deadline to receive 2009 expenses approached this past week, Leona Adams continued to receive and process Section Manager expense reports while keeping their section budget sheets updated. Leona has also been in touch with our Section Managers with regard to several updates and new appointments to the Field Organization data base. Steve Ewald prepared and turned in the Public Service column for March QST, and he did some more work on the Public Service and Field Organization pages for the new ARRL Web site. Chuck Skolaut forwarded the nominations that ARRL Headquarters has received for the 2009 Humanitarian Award to members of the Programs and Services Committee. He also filled in at W1AW to set up and transmit code practice for a couple of days this past week. Official Observers in Eastern Massachusetts are investigating interference on a 2 meter repeater, and OOs in Missouri have documented evidence of business use of a repeater. Appropriate information has been forwarded onto the FCC.
