<<053012.doc>> IN-Newsletter <<Microsoft Word Picture>> Vol. 35, No. 22 May 30, 2012 -- Covers the period May 20-26. Upcoming Meetings and Events Second Board Meeting July 20-21, 2012 @ 9:00am in Windsor, CT Media & Public Relations Reported by Allen Pitts, W1AGP One idea we will be trying this June is the publication of a PR "countdown calendar" listing actions that can and should be taken leading up to Field Day. The Annual Report is still in Graphics and we are editing the hours of Dayton presentation videos. The PRC will be holding a Webinar teaching how to make good FD video on Thursday evening, May 31 at 9pm EDT. Issues with the server providing the large files of PR related videos have been addressed. Development Reported by Lauren Clarke, KB1YDD The ARRL Foundation has voted on 2012 scholarships: 192 applications were received this year from many qualified and exceptional young hams and the Foundation Scholarship Committee had a challenging time making recommendations from so many worthy candidates. From this pool, 73 students were selected and will receive $87,200 from 50 scholarship funds. Additionally, Jill Niemeier, AC0MX, has been selected to receive the 2012 William R. Goldfarb Memorial Scholarship. Jill is planning to go to the University of Arkansas this fall and major in Chemistry/Biochemistry. Recipients will be notified this week. To Date: The W1AW Endowment Campaign has received $49,414 in contributions from 812 donors. The Spectrum Defense Fund has received $68,422 in contributions from 319 donors. The Diamond Club has received $95,195 in contributions from 516 donors. The Education & Technology Program has received $26,654 in contributions from 102 donors. An additional $109,194 from six donors has been received in support of the Teachers Institute Program. Production/Editorial Reported by Joel Kleinman, N1BKE The July QST digital edition has been released to the vendor. Sales and Marketing Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R The marketing team executed a handful of tasks supporting the formal launch of the digital edition of QST on May 23. The rollout went very smoothly, with few surprises. We're handling inquiries from members requiring support (largely login and password resets). Member feedback is being followed closely. And, we continue to give significant attention to promoting the new benefit as a reason to join ARRL. A postcard promoting the new digital QST benefit has started to return some new memberships. Diane Petrilli has reported on membership applications received in Dayton. There were 1,175 membership applications taken (vs. 1,158 in 2011), with dues totaling $65,380 (vs. $61,705 in 2011). Similar to previous years, 85% of the memberships were renewals. A special promotion for a 3-year membership with a bonus Handbook boosted the total membership years to 1,845. Nearly one quarter of all applications were for three years. A truckload of materials returning from Dayton were received into the warehouse during the week, and a reconciliation of inventory items is underway. The warehouse crew fulfilled 1,024 packages for publication and product orders, 318 membership signing premiums, plus QST mailing supplements. A new book release featuring the new edition of The ARRL Extra Class License Manual (10th Edition) was emailed to ARRL Members who hold a General Class license. "Memorial Day" themed email helped bolster membership and product sales over the long holiday weekend-returning over 400 orders and 50 previously lapsed members. Customers ordering $40 or more earned a bonus ARRL Field Day Pin and ARRL Field Day Logbook. Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N Field Organization/Public Service Team On Tuesday, May 22, Section Manager election ballots were opened and counted for two balloted elections. Leona Adams, Chuck Skolaut, Gail Iannone, and Steve Ewald served as the team to handle the ballot counting. In Indiana, Lou Everett, Sr., WA5LOU, was elected as the Indiana Section Manager. Everett, of Indianapolis, has been serving the Field Organization as the Indiana Section Traffic Manager, a Net Manger, Official Relay Station and as an Official Observer. The incumbent, Indiana Section Manager, John Poindexter, W3ML, decided not to run for a new term of office. In Northern Florida, incumbent Section Manager Paul Eakin, KJ4G, was re-elected to another term. New terms begin July 1. Santa Clara Valley will have a new Section Manager as of July 1. Brandon Bianchi, NI6C, will be stepping into the Section Manger's position and will be taking over from Phil Steffora, K6TT, who decided not to run for a new term of office. Bianchi, of Salinas, California, is currently serving as an Assistant Section Manager. The following incumbent ARRL Section Managers did not face opposition and were declared elected for their next terms of office beginning July 1: Bonnie Altus, AB7ZQ (Oregon); Larry Camp, WB8R (Michigan); Tom Ciciora, KA9QPN (Illinois); Paul Gayet, AA1SU (Vermont); Don Michalski, W9IXG (Wisconsin); and Bill Woodhead, N1KAT (Maine). Radio amateurs from Georgia, Los Angeles, Delaware, and Virginia completed requirements to become Official Observers this past week. It seems the recent article in QST about the Official Observer program has sparked extra interest in the program. Questions handled this week dealt with operating overseas, antenna restrictions, determination of grid square location, and information about 1.2 GHz band privileges. Several complaints were received regarding 7213 kHz and 14320 kHz involving interference and/or jamming. Chuck also conducted a code qualifying run at W1AW.
