Optimizers are basically DC to DC converters designed to combat shading in solar arrays. They may also incorporate module level rapid shutdown as required by recent NEC revisions in the USA for firefighter safety. In the USA, the current part 15 regs are unable to do anything about some of this interference and by all accounts it's only getting worse.
