[arrl-odv:15688] ARRL Met-Life Insurance Comment

Yawn, noticed the Met-Life insurance people in the ARRL area at Dayton. Paid no attention. Got renewal bill for auto insurance. Liability rates went up 50%! No accidents or tickets to blame. Explained on telephone as, "California readjustment." Actually California now forbids basing insurance rates on where you live in the state, and only allows your driving record to be considered. This of course spreads the risk of using your vehicle in litigation-prone communities like Beverly Hills and vandalism-ridden communities to those of us who live in communities that insurance companies have historically found to represent less risk. Well, about the same time, I received a mailing from Met-Life about the ARRL program, and noticed that they were offering auto insurance quotes. Not expecting anything, I phoned and got my quote. Turned out to be significantly less expensive. Checked with the other low-cost insurance companies, and Met-Life's quote was still the best. I placed my order a couple of days ago. Savings was a couple hundred dollars a year, and they gave me a one-year policy as opposed to the 6-month offers from other firms. Some of our constituents have apparently protested the mailing. In addition to telling them my personal story, I'll be certain to present Met-Life as an affinity relationship program, not merely a selling of a mailing list. For instance, Costco has affinity programs where Costco members get special rates. Some credit unions negotiate similar deals for their members. ARRL has used its strength to negotiate a discount with Met-Life. There is no obligation on the part of our members to do business with Met-Life, but at least one of us has found it to be financially advantageous. 73, Dick Norton, N6AA
