Also, I participated in the spring meeting of the Executive Committee in Denver. Locally, I was invited to give a kick-off talk at the first session of a Technician licensing course. I briefly described several dozen things a person can do in Amateur Radio, many of them with a Tech license but others requiring an upgrade to General. Students commented that they had no idea there were so many different kinds of activities in Amateur Radio. At this writing, I do not know how many people will successfully complete the course by passing their exams, but it is good news that in our small university town there are enough people on the waiting list to fill the next course to be held in the fall. We have a challenging agenda for the Second Meeting this year, as we revise the Leagues strategic plan and consider a number of other significant issues. One of them is protection of Amateur Radio spectrum from commercialization by well-meaning entities that urgently need education about the appropriate relationship between their organizations and the Amateur Radio Service. Because we no longer spend time re-hashing routine reports that are available to us before the meeting one of the positive outcomes of a previous round of strategic planning we will have time for thoughtful discussion of this and other subjects. Thanks to careful planning on the part of the Administration and Finance Committee and the Headquarters Staff, programs for and services to members have not been cut despite the gruesome economic conditions that our country has been experiencing. Also, the ARRL is still in a position to meet our financial responsibilities to the international Amateur Radio community via the IARU. I believe that voluntary donations and the value of our investment portfolio will recover as the national economy does. The fact that membership is holding its own and even increasing a bit says to me that hams still have confidence in their League. I am pleased that the League has a presence on popular social networking sites Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter that I am aware of. Such sites, while initially most popular with youth, are now heavily used by people of all ages to share interests and activities. Politicians, entertainers, sports teams, businesses, and educational institutions, among others, have discovered the power of these sites to promote awareness and discussion of their activities. We are not the only national society using these sites. For example, Radio Amateurs of Canada, Radio Society of Great Britain, and Irish Radio Transmitters Society are on Facebook. Also, ARRL video material, such as the 2009 Field Day public service announcements, has been posted by Staff on YouTube. Even if you do not enjoy or even see the point of social networking sites and video-sharing sites, be assured that the Leagues presence on these sites sends a powerful and extremely cost-effective message about how the ARRL is keeping up with the times. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you for the ARRL and the Amateur Radio Service.
