[ARRL-ODV:9540] Contacting members

Now that the vaunted Cincinnati Bengals have flexed their muscles and won a game (hey, it's a winning streak!), I feel sufficiently empowered to raise a topic: Member Sign-up to use the MEMBERS ONLY web page. I've not looked recently at the member totals for the GLD, but there are just over 50% of these who are signed up to receive Director & SM E-mail through MEMBERS ONLY. This is a larger total than before we changed from an opt-in to an opt-out list, but it is woefully low. I realize that many of our older members (gee, I'm saying "older members") may not know what a computer looks like, but I'm equally certain that we can do much better than +/- 50%. The question is, "How?" Would it be correct to ask our august QST Editor to run "ads" in this excellent journal to encourage member sign-ups? If so, what would we tout as reasons to encourage them to sign-up? For one, I'd tout keeping members increasingly aware of need to respond to proposed regulatory and legislative action related to Amateur Radio, etc. Comments? Jim W.
