[arrl-odv:13524] Re: Report of the Programs and Services Committee

Kay raises a good point. Thanks for the reminder. Mentoring is one area where PSC hasn't pushed ahead. We have discussed mentor but not taken any action. We will address it specifically this week. It occurs to me that while experience on a variety of committees is a plus for each of the directors, there is also a downside. A committee can study an area and develop a vision of how to address a problem or concern. About the time the analysis is done and the Board approves action, the membership of the committee and frequently the chair changes. All too often the new members and chair may have a slightly different focus, priorities and ideas of what needs to be done. The result can be forward movement but in more of a zig-zag than a straight line. Perhaps it may be worthwhile for "retiring" committee chairs to develop a checklist of ongoing and pending committee matters. We could then include references to the items on the checklist at the July meeting and again the following January when we "realign" the committee's. At Minute 36 of the January '04 meeting, the mentoring program designed by the VRC was adopted by vote of the Board. I thought that was great because the program sounded quite innovative and worthwhile. As far as I'm aware, only one part of this four-part program has been implemented in the 2 years since the motion was passed. It's the business-as-usual part of the program, too, not the three more creative parts. I'm not seeing any reference to the program in the PSC reports now. Whazzup? 73 - Kay N3KN
