Hello All,
I wanted to share a quick note about how some HamWAN users who were viewing the camera feeds this morning and spotted a small fire that had started. They reported it to the DNR, who thanked them for the first report they’d gotten on the fire, and they’ve sent a team to try and keep it small and under control. It’s estimated currently at around 50 acres, south-east of Enumclaw along highway 410.

Thank you to the folks who saw it this morning, helped the authorities with the report, as well as all the team involved in the install & maintenance of the network so we can have these awesome capabilities like multiple high resolution cameras available at several of our sites.
I hope everyone is staying safe with the current fires and smokey conditions around the northwest!
Thanks, Nigel

And… if I’m reading the description correctly, it is utilizing 5 GHz for the backbone links!! Yet another reason to protect this spectrum. A group of citizen volunteers set up a network at no cost to the government (or the public) and is providing health and safety services to the public that often saves (or prevents the loss of) lives and property. There is no higher calling for Amateur Radio and the FCC should be working with us to support this capability. It seems that many at the FCC look with disdain at Amateur Radio and the League—as either an annoyance or a service that does not deserve their attention—perhaps owing to the budget cuts, loss of ‘real engineers’ within the FCC and the political climate surrounding 5G and “Internet for Rural America” activities. We are being lost in the noise. If the FCC isn’t going to listen to the League, its time to partner with every other entity that support us. Several years ago I was with a small group of hams testifying in front of a Colorado House committee considering providing Amateur Radio operators with the same legal protections that are granted to volunteer firefighters. The sponsors of the bill appeared to be lukewarm about the legislation—it was evident that some were dismissive concerning our capabilities and value to the public. Unknown to us, the lobbyist for the Colorado County Sheriff’s Association asked to be heard—and it was obvious that this lobbyist was well known to the members of the committee owing to the deference that was given to her. She began by reminding the committee that she represented the County Sheriff’s across the state and went on to state that Amateur Radio operators provide invaluable services to the sheriffs and the citizens of Colorado. The change of expression on the faces of the committee members were evident. Instead of the ‘business as usual’ laconic gaze that is often typical of legislators dealing with the daily administrative boredom, we saw a ‘I didn’t know that’ attentiveness. Heads nodding, committee members looking at each other with a ‘did you know this?’ expression among others. The bill passed unanimously and wound up being signed by the governor. Shouldn’t we start to leverage our friends who carry a bigger stick than perhaps we’re able to wield with the FCC? Just sayin’…. In addition to the points mentioned here, we need to make it clear that emcomm in ham radio is not just baofengs and repeaters - because that’s the impression that the world gets. It’s high speed data which isn’t even the future, it’s the present. This can also have the additional effect of encouraging younger people to become interested in amateur radio. HF is quaint. High speed data is hip. That doesn’t mean we abandon anything. It just means that we show that we are embracing new technology rather than old tech. I was at the NJ statehouse in Trenton the other day presenting to several officials including the commissioner of the BPU who didn’t even know about amateur radio’s role in disaster comms. I did mention our work with AREDN including our wealth of former (And current!) talent from Bell Labs. But it was a struggle to go beyond that in terms of anything modern. It was almost embarrassing to have to explain ham radio to them. I would like us to be comparable to new tech like 5G (maybe not at parity with, but offering similar capability in emergencies). That’s a tough ask but we have many brilliant minds who can make it possible. 73 Ria N2RJ On Wed, Sep 9, 2020 at 11:58 AM Jeff Ryan <k0rm@comcast.net> wrote:
