[arrl-odv:29796] April editorial

When Barry had announced that he would be letting various staff write editorials in place of the CEO editorials, I saw this as a great opportunity for the staff to relay to membership about initiatives that they are working on and what they can expect. This month’s QST leaves me wondering where exactly that plan went. I certainly wasn’t expecting the opinion piece about high speed digital modes, and how they are here to stay. What exactly does that editorial say anyway? There was one mention of something done, the Red Cross emergency test, and quite frankly that’s old news, almost a year old in fact. Talking to members they really don’t see the league as having initiative to push things forward. The only exception these days is On The Air and these similar activities. Members are excited about that because it is practical and useful to them. While I certainly do appreciate editorial independence, I would hope that we use our ink wisely. So let’s tell the members more of what’s going on, rather than just an opinion piece? Howard actually wrote about that in his last couple of editorials. Members were excited and liked that quite a lot versus the “role of the CEO” editorials they’ve been seeing before. When people saw Steve Jobs, they were more interested in what’s going to be in the next iPhone, not what Steve thought about the computing industry. When people see Elon Musk speak they want to know what’s coming to the next Tesla software update, not what he thinks of electric cars in general. You get where I am coming from. The bottom line is that the #1 thing I hear from members is they don’t want to hear politics and opinion. They want to know what we’ve done for them lately and what we’re going to do. They want to see results and get excited about things on the horizon. 73 Ria, N2RJ
