[ARRL-ODV:7566] Re: N1MZA - SK

Steve was hired by management at the behest of the Public Relations Committee some years ago because the Board felt that we needed a staff person as the firm we had hired simply was not able to do the job ARRL needed for many reasons.
From the first he showed those of us in the media industry keen insight into getting a byline or video tape quote. As he got to know the League our column inches of print nationally went way up. He was enthusiastic and enjoyed being our "pitchman".
When Perry Williams retired it was almost a cinch that Steve should be the guy to take over. His knowledge of Amateur Radio and the League became the launching pad for someone with a reporters love of Washington DC, the news it both generates and the power that resides there. As the years passed, Steve could accurately gauge what would happen with bills and I found him to have unique insight on Capital Hill goings on. The members were well served by Steve Mansfield. He was a pleasure to know, a friend to all who came in contact with him and a true professional. I, too, shall miss the many facets Steve brought to his job, as well as the humor and friendship of many years. - Steve, W2ML
