[arrl-odv:14095] Re: H Res 230

Tnx for the clarification, Dave. Excellent input. Jim Weaver, K8JE Director, Great Lakes Division Chairman, Legislative Action Committee 5065 Bethany Rd. (By the way, markup of the Senate telecom bill, S.2686, has been postponed until June 20.) The other Senators also can be approached to support the inclusion of our BPL language in the telecom bill, although the Commerce Committee is the priority for the next few weeks. Section 502 is of course a very minor part of HR 5252. There are some aspects of HR 5252 that are quite controversial and that some of our members may not like because of their own views on Internet governance. If we ask our members to support HR 5252 we may generate some negative response because of that. It could hurt us if members of Congress start to hear conflicting messages from hams about HR 5252. Instead, our objective is for the House Rules Committee to not permit any amendment being offered on the floor that would delete or emasculate Section 502 of the bill. For that reason we have asked Directors with members of the Rules Committee in their divisions to identify contacts who can be activated at the appropriate time. If HR 5252 is defeated (not likely, in my opinion, assuming it is brought to a vote) we will have H.Res. 230 to fall back on (although to be realistic, by then it will be so late in the session and Congress has so much else to do that it's unlikely to go anywhere). That's my take on the situation at present. Res. 230 and 2) It is too soon to become involved in a campaign to support H.B. 5252. I don't recall if it was Joel, Dave or maybe even John C. who gave this advice, initially. Similarly, there is nothing specific to support at this moment in the Senate regarding a BPL amendment to its communications act rewrite. It's still not clear to me if we want members to continue writing their Representatives in support of H Res 230, or if that campaign is on hold while we urge them to write in support of keeping Section 502 in HR 5252.
