<<051910.doc>> IN-Newsletter <<Microsoft Word Picture>> Vol. 33, No. 20 May 19, 2010 -- Covers the period May 9-15. Upcoming Meetings and Events Second Board Meeting: July 16-17, 2010 @ 9:00am in Windsor, CT Media & Public Relations Reported by Allen Pitts, W1AGP It was an excellent time at Dayton this past weekend. Lots of contacts made and renewed, including the possibility of two sets of new video promotions in the near future. The PR Forum was well attended despite being the first hour of the first day at Dayton. Presentations were also made at the ARES forum and at Bill Pasternak's Town Hall Meeting. Present and helping out at various points were PRC members Diana Eng, Walt Palmer, Gordon West, and a LOT of help from Bill Morine. The 2009 Leonard Award for audio work was given to Ted Randall. Key discussions were held on many topics including the exploration of in-house video capabilities, the 75th anniversary of ARES and maximizing the options of the new website. The earthquake in Puerto Rico was a surprise, but even from Dayton we quickly established contact and monitored events as they unfolded, able to offer aid if needed. On May 19, Media & PR also participated in the Field Day webinar led by Dan Henderson. Development Reported by Mary Hobart, K1MMH ARRL hosted the largest reception for donors since 2002 as nearly 150 donors gathered at the Meadowbrook Country Club on May 12 prior to Dayton Hamvention. The event included dignitaries from the international ham radio community. New members of the Maxim Society were welcomed, bringing the total of donors in the lifetime giving society to 67. ARRL received contributions during Hamvention totaling $60,000, including $45,000 for the Education & Technology Fund and $10,000 for Spectrum Defense. Revenues from the W1AW Endowment campaign have reached $61,535 from 1029 donors. The ARRL Diamond Club has received gross revenues for 2010 totaling $120, 526 from 843 contributions. Production/Editorial Reported by Joel Kleinman, N1BKE Khrystyne Keane was a faculty member and Senior Support Staff at the 2010 Dayton Contest University. She co-led the RTTY forums with Ed Muns, W0YK, and then took photos at and wrote Web and QST articles about the Hamvention. Khrystyne wrote and Joel Kleinman distributed The ARRL Letter for May 13, 2010. Lab Reported by Ed Hare, W1RFI RFI Mike Gruber received a phone call from WTIC Chief Engineer Jeff Hugabonne. Jeff reported that CL&P was less than enthusiastic than correcting a power line interference problem in the Spoonville area of East Granby. The area had previously been investigated by Mike Gruber and Jerry Ramie. Jeff reports that CL&P doesn't have the capability to track interference. His contact at CL&P further suggested that this was actually a complaint filed by a radio Amateur - not by a listener of WTIC. Jeff's CL&P contact apparently had been involved with a problematic power line nose case in Coventry. Jeff refused to take no for an answer and promised to let me know how it goes. (Note: The initial complainant was filed by a nearby radio Amateur, W1AEX on behalf of his mother-in-law, who wants to listen to ball games on WTIC.). Mike Gruber completed work on the EMC Chapter for the 2011 ARRL Handbook. All material, with the exception of a sidebar, has been forwarded to Ward Silver for editing. Laura Smith will be in Moscow most of next week. Mike also expects a backlog of RFI issues will develop as a result of an extended absence. Travel Bob Allison traveled to Dayton Ohio for the ARRL Exposition at the Dayton Hamvention. As with last year's event, Bob organized and conducted the kit building exhibition, with great success. We had double the number of participants as compared to last year's exhibition, with the number of kits built or sold jumping from 42 to 93. Friday started out with just a few kit builders during the first hour, but filled to capacity by mid morning and continued filled the rest of the day. Saturday, the kit building area was packed and a waiting list had to be used for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, many were not staying around on Sunday and had to walk away disappointed since the class was filled to capacity. The big surprise was Sunday, in which last year, we had only one or two completing their kits. This year, the kit building area filled to capacity shortly after the doors were open. Another waiting list was started and I had to cut off new builders at 11 AM in order for everyone to complete their kit by 1 PM, closing time. Which kit sold the most? The paddle/keyer kit! It was nice to see several of last year's participants again this year. Also, we seemed to have more children building kits who liked the Morse code. The volunteers who worked with me were absolutely wonderful and all promised to help next year, if we decide to have another kit building exhibition. Electronic Publications There are reports of bad disks that just can't be read. We are forwarding them to Amy Hurtado to arrange for replacement. We did get one runtime error regarding the new Travelplus 14-we sent that report to Al Ambrose to investigate. Membership & Volunteer Programs Reported by Dave Patton, NN1N W1AW As usual, W1AW had seen a significant number of visitors on the days leading up to the Dayton Hamvention. Quite a few hams took time out of their travels to the convention to make a quick stop at the station. Joe worked the late afternoon/night shifts on Thursday and Friday for the vacationing Scott Gee. He also processed regular QSL card requests and continued processing the 2009 IARU cards for W1AW/KL7. Joe built a digital interface for the Kenwood TS-480SAT (located in Studio Three). He also processed one Qualifying Run certificate.
