January membership

Jim Haynie hates to hear me say it, but once again this past month we lost fewer members than expected. We were down 422 vs. a projected loss of 658. We always lose members in January. The reason is that there is a larger than normal number of expirations in December because there is a tendency, particularly among foreign members, for memberships to run with the calendar year. So, even if the renewal percentage is normal we have more expirees who have to be replaced with new members just to stay even. We signed up 854 new members during the month, the best month since the dues increase. Part of this is the result of a 30,000-piece membership promotion mailing getting out a few days earlier than we'd expected, giving us some returns in January that we hadn't counted on until February. So in reality we're just about on track -- we simply banked some new members a little early. The division and section breakdowns are available at http://www.arrl.org/members-only/ODV/memstats.html. 73, Dave K1ZZ
