[arrl-odv:16818] QST Delivery Problems

From: Harold Kramer Bob Inderbitzen We are sorry to report that the June QST mailing data was pulled incorrectly from our subscriber database. The mailing was missing approximately 4,000 current members out of a mailing list of 145,000 that we usually mail. The total membership figure of 153,000 includes family, blind, and International CD members who do not receive separate copies of QST. While, until today, we had only received a few scattered complaints from members, we learned the extent of this mistake just this morning. After some research by ISD, we determined that the mailing data for June QST was mistakenly based on the month-old membership records used for mailing May QST. As a result: * approximately 4,000 members-mostly new acquisition and late renewals-were missing from the June QST data pull * a couple thousand "May" expirees were mistakenly sent June QST * the mailing data was missing a month of address changes (snowbirds, changes-of-address, address corrections, name changes, etc.). Don Durand, Information Services Manager, explained that the "standard monthly process failed when the wrong server was accessed for the run and that the possibility of this problem re-occurring has now been removed." The mistake went unnoticed because the mailing totals were similar to previous months of QST circulation. We have identified the missing membership records and June QST will be mailed to those members in the Western-half of the US on Tuesday; and the Eastern-half on Wednesday. Some international members were also affected (under 200), and those copies were mailed today. We have enough remaining copies of June QST to satisfy these mailings. As always, we routinely send replacement copies of QST to members who report non-delivery due to an address change or other reasons. If a member has a delivery problem, they should contact customer service at circulation@arrl.org or 888-277 -5289. We will be able to tell them if their issue was recently mailed or if a replacement needs to be sent. We all regret this incident, but we have learned where the problem occurred and we have taken steps to prevent it from happening again.
