I'm sure that there are those who might disagree with the tactic, but I don't see how the petition could hurt. I've heard the discussion... is Congress and the FCC (and are we) actually waiting to see what happens in an activist lawsuit to make a decision on an OTARD measure for amateur radio? If it comes down against RF, will the industry fold and shutdown 5G? We know that won't happen. How does decades of research on biological effects of RF get set aside by an activist with a famous name? I hear about HOA restrictions almost every day. Our members need to see some action - at least the Change.org petitioner is doing something visible. Someone give us a good reason we should join this petition or put together something similar that works in our favor, or I expect our members will find board members who will. I’m on the road so just a quick note. I wish they would take down the picture of the beams. Reminds of one time visiting with a staffer (don’t recall who) in DC pitching our antenna bill the first time around and one of our Directors in the group (no longer on the Board) pulled out a picture of his tower and beams at his residential home (and we didn’t know he was going to do it) and said this is what we want to be able to put up. The staffer said something to the effect that he wouldn’t want that big thing in his neighborhood either. The meeting didn’t last long. Rick - K5UR Sent from my iPhone

“. . .one of our Directors in the group (no longer on the Board) pulled out a picture of his tower and beams at his residential home (and we didn’t know he was going to do it) and said this is what we want to be able to put up”. Wow! And this behavior is why, as the saying goes, we cannot have nice things. I get similar comments and pictures of ugly towers (exaggerated of course) submitted in opposition at zoning appeal hearings from opponents. This is the kind of shoot-in-the-foot behavior that we must reign in. That may be impossible. Rick, I spoke with the creator of this change.org initiative earlier today and he has changed the photo to a small “Urban beam” that he has installed with HOA permission behind his home. W7HU is a Cuban immigrant that came to the US on a wooden pallet. Amateur radio was used by a yacht to find a Mexican Coast Guard boat who rescued him and his compadres from this situation – he has other amateur radio stories. He is an affable and interesting NON-MEMBER. He did not renew his membership after speaking with a now gone ARRL staffer in 2020. Said staffer refused to send him a letter to show his HOA that he was an “Active amateur radio operator and a member of the ARRL in good standing.” He quoted the staffer, “We have 150,000 members. What if I had to send everyone a letter like that?” I told him the staffer was likely gone, that we have leadership who is effecting change. He agreed to renew his membership. He said I was the first person from the ARRL who had ever reached out to him for anything. I’ve seen his petition – I have it six times from members today. It is posted with hundreds of replies on Facebook. I have signed it. This petition could gather more signatures than ARRL has members very quickly. If we “officially” endorsed it and offered to present it to – someone – as evidence of a large number of people who want this changed, would that be as effective as contributing $ to a politician’s fund in line with a lot of other PACs? ARRL could PROMOTE a viral event to make the nation aware of this issue with the right endorsement! W7HU, Elex, left me with this – the most powerful thing in politics today, is not political contributions, it is social media. Social media drives politics – incumbent politicians assume the cash is going to flow in. Social media means votes and vote influencers. Bright man. He would make a good section manager. But as of today, he was not a member. One of those twenty-something people who have left the employ of ARRL likely drove him and many others away. HOA antennas are not a membership issue. This is an amateur radio issue. When the Legislative Committee speaks to legislators, use the number of licensed amateurs, not the ARRL membership. For one, I’m working to make them equal. I might just have to go on a hunger strike until everyone joins… Mickey Baker, N4MB Director, Southeastern Division ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® Phone: 561 320-2775 Email: n4mb@arrl.org From: Richard Roderick <k5ur@aol.com> Sent: Monday, December 20, 2021 3:40 PM To: Baker, Mickey, N4MB (Dir, SE) <mbaker@arrl.org> Cc: Jairam, Ria, N2RJ (Dir, HD) <n2rj@arrl.org>; arrl-odv <arrl-odv@arrl.org> Subject: Re: [arrl-odv:33097] Re: HOA issue. -change.org petition I’m on the road so just a quick note.
