[arrl-odv:23589] "If you build it, he will come." /WELCOME to Art!

Mike, spoken like a true New Yawwker! I couldn't agree more! Art (K0AIZ), welcome to the board family from a previous SM! New adventures await! I have received nothing but thank-you messages both on-the-air and written. I've made around 3,000 QSOs and all I've heard is "let's do this again next year" or something to that effect. I've also had the pleasure of talking to members who have been dormant, and non-members who have said that they enjoyed the event so much that they were going to join and/or rejoin if they were lapsed. Getting on-the-air and playing radio has been a publicity touchdown for Amateur Radio and the League. So, to those scant few curmudgeons who are upset about the noise, I say "#@^." 73 de Mike N2YBB -----Original Message----- From: Jim Pace K7CEX NW Division Director Sent: Monday, December 08, 2014 10:42 AM To: n3kn@verizon.net ; arrl-odv Subject: [arrl-odv:23581] Re: "If you build it, he will come." Certainly there will always be detractors. However, I have heard nothing but good reports on the Centennial QSO party; not just from members of NW Division, but on the air comments as well. Some members are even asking if there can be more activities like this. Bravo Zulu to those who came up with the Centennial QSO idea. 73, Jim, K7CEX -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kay Craigie" <n3kn@verizon.net> Sent: Monday, December 08, 2014 7:11 AM To: "arrl-odv" <arrl-odv@arrl.org> Subject: [arrl-odv:23577] "If you build it, he will come."
We have all probably heard a few gripes about the increased activity on the air because of the Centennial operating events. Because this strikes me as like complaining about too much chocolate, I let it go in one and out the other.
Maybe, on the other hand, you have also heard anecdotes like the one NF7E wrote on the back of his QSL card. A copy is attached. I've heard this kind of story several times from various parts of the country. If even a few inactive hams have come back because of the Centennial, that's wonderful. I have had QSOs with excited brand-new hams, for whom the Centennial year is Year One of their ham radio lives. More than one member has commented that the QSO Party and the W1AW/x chase are the best things the ARRL has ever done. With respect to stimulating operating, it's hard to argue with that.
(Unless you're one of those old barnacles who have sat on a frequency since the Eisenhower administration and complained about every single thing.)
When we were first brainstorming about what we wanted the Centennial to accomplish, we talked about wanting people to think and learn, to do, and to feel. Part of accomplishing that was having operating events people would enjoy for a whole year and remember long afterwards. Thanks to a great deal of effort by many people, that ball is over the fence and onto the third deck.
I hope you'll be able to participate in the final Red Badge Day on December 31 and help send the Centennial year out with a whoop.
