New hamPage A6 of the Wednesday, April 9th New York Times has an interesting paragraph about an American Coast Guard icebreaker that happened to be near the Equator (don't ask) and rescued a church mission boat that had broken down on its way to Kiribati. The icebreaker Polar Sea, which was returning from Antartica, was able to rescue the 114-foot boat with 64 people aboard after its engines failed. Apparently the story was reported by Agence France-Press. Here is the all important sentence from the story: "Ham radio operators picked up the distress signals on Sunday as the boat began drifting south of the Equator.
