[arrl-odv:26687] Birthday party for W1AW?

And, it would seem like W1AW's 80th could be a year-long *on the air event*. Every ham loves to work W1AW, and to get the card. A special "80-year anniversary" card wouldn't be too hard to dream up. There could even be a special commemorative version for a nominal charge (confirmed by LoTW???) I don't think we'd want to repeat the ordeal of operating W1AW portable from 50 states, but there sure could be some other promotion of W1AW on the air. 5-band W1AW anyone? http://www.arrl.org/inside-w1aw A 7-acre site was purchased in the sleepy town of Newington, about 5 miles southwest of Brainard Field. The Maxim Memorial Station, W1AW, was dedicated on September 2, 1938. The dedication ceremony was broadcast nationally by radio. The new building sat alone while the town grew up around it. Then, in 1963, the new ARRL Headquarters building was added to the site.

If you looked at the on-line Newington property assessment/tax data, you may have missed something important.
We just passed the 80th anniversary of purchasing the land that the ARRL HQ building is on. It was 7/31/1937...

I like that idea. Perhaps make the W1AW QSL card slightly different for each band e.g. color scheme. We should consider making the award free to ARRL members while non-members pay a nominal fee. Might incentivize folks to join. Maybe guest operators at W1AW leave with a special certificate in hand? 73’s, Rod, K0DAS From: G Widin Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2017 4:01 PM To: Tom Frenaye Cc: arrl-odv Subject: [arrl-odv:26687] Birthday party for W1AW?
