[arrl-odv:17663] RE: Legislative activity -- some progress to report

There has been promising progress made today toward the introduction of the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009. This morning John Chwat made contact with a freshman Congressman from Missouri, Blaine Luetkemeyer, who was the principal sponsor of the state PRB-1 legislation that was adopted in Missouri in 2004 when he was in the state House of Representatives. Rep. Luetkemeyer contacted Rep. Jackson-Lee's office this afternoon and signed on as an original co-sponsor. I think this is particularly good news because Rep. Luetkemeyer is a conservative Republican, which establishes that our bill has bipartisan support from across the ideological spectrum. We understand there will be at least one additional original co-sponsor when the bill is introduced. In the course of negotiating for original co-sponsors, Rep. Jackson-Lee's office is willing to make some minor changes in wording that do not affect the substance of the bill. So, don't be surprised if the bill as introduced differs slightly from the confidential draft I sent you last week. I hope to have even better news for you soon! Dave K1ZZ
