[arrl-odv:32994] Sad news re: Joel Hallas

I received the following from Becky I wanted to pass on to all of you: Joel W1ZR died on Thanksgiving morning, after surviving nearly 3 years with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Joel's daughter Katie contacted me early last week, to say that Joel's passing would be soon. On Saturday evening, I received an email thread from Bart, showing a conversation between Joe Reisert W1JR and Nancy Hallas, in which Nancy tells Joe of Joel's passing. I got Rick Lindquist started on Joel's Silent Key notice earlier this week. I'll check in with him on Sunday to see if it's ready to be posted. Joel was a brilliant mind, a generous mentor and colleague, and a consummate gentleman. He will be missed. Joel hung in there until the end offering to help Becky with various smaller tasks where she might use his talents. He will be truly missed. David

This is truly heartbreaking. For years I've enjoyed "The Doctor is IN" column and later on the Podcast. I learned so much from Joel over the years, and I was so glad when I got the opportunity to finally meet him. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. David, Yes, that is sad news. I worked with Joel several times in his 'Doctor' years. I always enjoyed those activities. Carl K9LA
