HQ Alabama Response Mike was in Mississippi at Mississippi State on personal business finishing up some loose ends to fulfill his Master's Degree.  While he was there, a tornado approached the campus and he helped the Dean with their (non-radio) emergency response. If you recall, he was a police officer on that campus while he was working on his degree. While he was in that part of the country, he checked with both the Alabama SM and SEC while he was there to see what, if any, assistance they required.  It is my understanding that the SM asked Mike if he could lend a hand.  Mike is not coordinating or managing the response.  He is assisting as a "regular", well trained,  ham. It is also my understanding that other Amateurs from Florida and other States have also been asked to assist.  At present, Alabama is requesting some Ham-Aid equipment for us to help with the response. We plan to ship out some Ham-Aid kits from HQ on Monday. One of the SEC's in the Atlantic Division just sent me information that ARRL Emergency Preparedness Manager, Mike Corey, is driving into Tuscaloosa to coordinate options with the Alabama Section Emergency Coordinator. Not knowing anymore than that, on the surface this doesn't appear to be utilizing our resources in the best manner possible.
